THE BENTO*RESIDENCE AT SWANINGTONBURNED EARLY THIS A. M.James Lockhart Fine Dwelling Consumed by Flames. Other Buildings EndangeredJames Lockhart’s fine residence at Swanington was completely destroyed by fire early this morning and for a tij.e other buildings were endangered from sparks blown by the high wind. The house burned to the ground and all the contents were destroyed including all the family wearing apparel, jewelry, etc.About five o’clock Earl arose and started a fire in the kitchen range and went out to do the morning chores. After being at the barn a short time he discovered a blaze on the roof of the main part of the house, just north of the kitchen. He secured a ladder and attempted to put out the blaze but by the time he got upon the house the roof was all on fire and he was unable to do anything. He then went into the house and awakened the other members of the family who escaped clad only in their night clothes. Neighbors assembled at the Lockhart home but as there was nothing that could be done to save the house, they organized and were kept busy keeping the fire from spreading to other buildings. Luckily there was a vacant lot just north of the Lockhart residence and as there was a high wind from the south, most of the sparks and burning boards fell on this lot.
