THE MISCELLANY NEWSNOVI MB! K 9, 1973Orleans Comes BackToLast ChanceBy Dean TodaOrleans has nothing to do with gumbo music - what they play falls under the unfortunate catchall heading of Woodstock rhythm and blues. You can listen to their new album (ORLEANS - ABC X-795) and label it yourself, but 1 must invoke that aged claim “You’ve got to hear them live to reaOy appreciate them.” If you haven't heard them onstage, youmissed two good chances these last Monday nights when they played to a full house at Frivolous Sal’s Last Chance Saloon. The Last Chance, which is located off the Main St. Mall downtown, isthe only place in town if you’re looking for a drink and some goodlive entertainment, and the crowd was eager to hear the hometown favorites lay it down. The band lives in Woodstock but used to play the Chance often; in the months preceding their somewhat triumphal return they’ve played on the road with War and cut their album.Orleans is John Hall, I^arry and Lanfee Hoppen, and Wells Kelly. Nominally they are lead guitar and lead vocal, organ, bass and drums respectively, but all four can and do switch to any other instrument with very adequate results. The versatility of the band is striking; even more so their experience: Hall hasproduced, written for, and played in Bonnie Haiti’s newest, written Half Moon” for Janis toured with Taj Mahal, played guitar in the studio for just about everyone who’s ever been to Woodstock, and, along with his wife writes most of Orlean’s music. Kelly and the Hoppen brothers are all well-traveled studio men, with associations ranging from Jay and lift Americans to A1 Kooper. The shows at the I-ast Chance were dominated by numbers from the album: they played ' Mountain”, Please Be There”, Tongue-Tied”, and Stoned”, among others. They closed the first set last Monday with a terrific blues number: If The Rabbit Had A Gun”, in which John and Larry really flashed on guitars. Second sets were always a little more loose than firsts, since by that time both band and audience had taken on a fair load. So we got to hear a fifties-style tune called Pre-verted l,ove and something called 'Tm a Bum.These are talented, mature musicians who could be Woodstock's newest prodigal sons with some more exposure and some dumb luck. They’re certainly popular in Poughkeepsie, and you know that fame starts at home.Indian Music MovedThe concert of Indian music originally scheduled for November 16 will take place tomorrow, November 10, at 8:30 p.m. in Skinner Hall. The concert will feature music for violin and tabla.Deso/ofion RowVinylQueen lElektra) An excellent debut album from a new British group. Queen are a very hard rock quartet who stay away from the ecesses of virtuosity” that have plagued so many other capable, but ultimately unexciting bands.Room to Grow Barnaby Bye Atlantic) Three ex-band members of Hair” joined with the drummer from an old acid-head band. The Illusion, to form Barnaby Bye. All four are lead singers and excellent m-trumentalists. Although their stage act could stand some improvement, Room to Grow is a superbly produced record. The songs are catchy, the lyrics easy and memorable, the harmonies as well integrated as Crosby Stills and Nash's and us wispy as the old Zombies. Their single, I Think I'm Gonna lake It” has been midly successful on lop-40and is an excellent example of the band’s budding talent.Occupation: Foole George Carlin Little David i Lenny Bruce may have done a great disservice to comedy audiences*irby allowing dirty words to become so prominent in this repetoire. In the hands of less talented comics, the use of vulgarity becomes simply pretentious; an appeal far the embarrased laughter that flatulation of any sort can cause. George Carlin, having divested himself of shirt, tie and restrictions, has gotten hung up in the ‘lets see how many times I can refer to shit in one routine syndrome. Moments of true, caustic humor in his discussions of growing up wierd are obscured by seemingly calculated digressions into peurile fantasy.BICYCLES REPAIRED!Ready St willing to repair all European ten-speeds and American three-speeds.I Fountain Place Apt. 7 Call after 5 p.m.4714519THE PRICE IS RIGHT!Large selection tennis dresses equipmentsneakers from $-3.99 Golf clubs, balls equipment44 Plaza Rt, 44open evenings ti! 9TYPINGERRORSbvt fHVMV* IlG HI- * W I’U - M t.Ml let f ' * — —CollegeERROR-FREE TWINSi W if Icoftsci tON mi onERRORiTEAT YOUR CAMPUS STORE19048 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie, New YorkOUT OF SIGHT!By MichaelPerhaps there still is a need for confrontation at the dirty' word barricades. Carlin doesn't seem to do it right.I Am A Song Cleo Imne lt;RCA i An impeccable collection of songs from one of the world’s best singers. Having just been introduced to Cleo l^ine. I can get righteously annoyed over not having the option of listening to her over the last ten years. Her genre is jazz-singing”, but that appelation ls meaningless. She sings Bach, Carole King. Gershwin and High Heel Sneakers on one side of the lp. What kmd of singer is she'.’ Who cares. She’s able to make a listener totally aware of the song without losing any appreciation for the singer. I Am A Song is a marvelously different album that will lend grace to any collection.I Oct i UK i and Boulders Roy Wood i U A) These are two albums which present in a totally clear form the entire history of pop music. Idee are composed in part of ex-Hot Legs who recorded oneof this decades silliest hits,“Neanderthal Man and in part of old Mindbenders. Their albumis fun rock, capturing theessential elements of some of the most important pop-musical trends. They can sound like the Beach Boys or like the Shangn-las. Their Ip is good tunes as is the first solo effort from ex-Mover and Wizzard founder Roy Wood, The Move have been mentioned before in this column as one of the greatest undiscovered bands of all time because of their ability to produce great singles without saerifycing the necessarycoherency of an album format. Wood is all alone here, playing everything from cello to guitar himself. The album is totally successful, matched only in its command of pop forms by the collected works of Todd Run-dgren. Strange that the wordwizard figures in both theircosmo logy s.Pinups David Bowie RCA I’ve allowed this album to grow on met a bit before reviewing it. At first I hated it. To quote Bowie's liner notes, these songs are among my favorites from the ii4-*67 period of LondonThey're among mine too, Bowie cops tunes from the Who, Pretty Things, Them, Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett i. Easy beats. Kinks, Mojos and Merseys. It makes you want to hunt oldy shops for the originals. The Spiders play as respectably as they always have.Bowie's vocals lack the feeling of his past albums, though. The album ends up being enjoyable not because of Bowie, but because of the songs themselves It’s likeable, but vaguely annoying. Live for David’s live lp and watch him on a special Midnight Special on NBC later this month. Bowie hosts, among others, The Troggs That treat alone is worth getting the cable connected,Chris Jagger (AsylumI Yup, it’s Mick's little bro'. He sounds a lot like his sibling but tries damned hard not to sing like him. Almost make-* you wonder how-much versatility Mick has and never used, Chris is no posuer. The material is excellent and theVinyl cont.p.Scol.2
