SOON MOST SUCCESSFUL [The Instructors Procured Prove Most Capable, the schools of that city. The people over on the west side fare law-abiding and orderly. They are principally of German extraction and like their beer which they use with moderation. Now through the pratt condition the decent saloon as been wiped out and the conse quent revenue and the bootlegger and increased taxation placed in the field. Had a real reform been effected per haps the price paid, $6,190, would not be exhorbitant but when the sale of inferior staff without regulation goes merrily on, the people have a right to stand solidly against the resent conditions of disposing of fiquor and refuse to listen to the no ted argument of those who do not know whereof they speak. Because the teachers of two coun tie, Idaho and Lewis counties, am pecting togeter the teachers’ institute is more interesting and lively than smal. Every hour of the five days, pasion is crowded with helpful work. Dr. Howorth of the University of Icago is both interesting in guctive. In a way that secures attention and holds it, he is enabled to present his instruction in a very secuive way. There is no doubt ‘Wbst is no result of his work many teachers will go back to their war better or to meet the problems of their districts. Dr. Howerth, who is amociate professor of Sociology in the University of Chicago, has lec tured before three institutes of Idaho on his western trip, and in each case has come with the approval of him Mr. Neilson, who is giving instruc tion in music and drawing, is now supervisor of drawing and music at Payette and Caldwell. For seven years before coming to Idaho he held the same position in the schools of Bandusky and Newark, Ohio. His work in the institute being adapted to the needs of the teachers will result in much good to the schools of the county. Mrs. Curtin is appearing a second time before the teachers of Idaho county, because of the good and help ful work she gave in her first institute here. Fn her lectures, she is dealing with primary reading, phonics and elementary literature. About one-hundred-fifty teachers are present from the two counties, ninety-five being from Idaho county, and the remainder from Lewis county. All are present from Lewis county, exept one on account of illness, and all fromdaho county, except three who live in such far away mountain districts that Supt. Glanville excused them. One teacher, Miss Edna Bell, rode forty miles on horseback to attend this institute and her sister, Mrs Ethel, rode thirty miles. Two man from Woodland walked twenty miles, Mr. Reese and Mr. Lansing. Thus I am thinking that the energy of some of these western teachers would put to shame many of the Tem energetic eastern teachers. It is Worth mentioning here that of these cetred iy teachers, thirty tee ate men, enough to prevent lonliness—of the men. The average experience of the teachers of the two counties is five years, and twenty-two are oneat first term. A musical program given by local musicians was well afcade by all and much enjoyed. The reception by the Grangeville teachers which followed the program helped to make Many strangers know each other Setter. No doubt it, too, was en joyed notwithstanding the wrecking of several trains and the over eating at some of the stations on the way. More should be said of this musical Program, for it is one of the best things of the institute. There was o ne duet by Mises Wilkinson and Indgero, vocal solos by Mrs. Hatta beuzh, Mr. Algie, Nis. Overman, ¥. Neilson, Miss Jones, Dr. Riggs vex cello solo, Miss Schmadeka a Piano solo, Mrs. James a reading, oa Mr. Hattabaug in behalf of the car school board and the town wel comed the teachers to Grangeville. —. Here's hoping that Supt. Glanville and Supt. Eva Henderson of Lewis fores a continue to unite their rot and resources in giving us this ind of institute. ae
