High Point College took its first step towards the first NAIA District 26 soccer championship in the school’s history Thursday afternoon with a 5-0 shutout of Elon College. The win left the Panthers, who are North Carolina’s only undefeated collegiate soccer team, with an 11-0-2 record and sends them into Saturday’s finals with Belmont Abbey College. The game between the Panthers and the defending district champion, Crusaders will be played in High Point's Albion-Millis Stadium Satur day at 2:00 p.m. High Point got on the scoreboard in the first half with a goal by Gary Downing at 24:00. The Panthers made it 2-0 as Jeff Potter scored his 10th goal of the season on a penalty kick at 9:46 of the second half. Eric Herr, a reserve lineman, got the first of two goals at 21:12 as he headed in a pass from fullback Jerry Gostic and Bill Redfern made it 40 three minutes later on an unassisted goal. Herr’s second goal was another header off an assist by Wayne Wright, . The Panthers dominated play throughout with a 52-19 Margin in shots of goal. Peter Ranney had seven saves in the goal before being relieved by Richard Kellerher who preserved the shutout, Saturday's matchup with Belmont Abbey will be a rematch of the regular season game that decided top seed in the district playoffs. The Panthers downed the Crusaders 1-0 two weeks ago, but the Abbey comes into the game having won the last six district championships. They reached the finals against the Panthers with a 6-0 victory over Guilford. ‘‘We played extremely well in the second half against Elon,” offered Panther coach Ray Alley. “From the standpoint of putting things together offensively it might have been our best half all season. We are looking forward to playing the Abbey again and we know that we will have to put together two halves like we played today if we are going to be the dis trict champions. “We feel that we are the best team in our district and this Saturday we have’ a chance to prove it.'”” Defensive standouts in the Elon game included half backs Downing and Paul Goehle and fullbacks Wright, Tom Mackintosh and Jerry Gostic.
