FORMER RESIDENTS TELL OF COUNTRY NEAR CANADIAN BOUNDARY LINE. The Democrat is in receipt of an interesting letter from Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wissing, former Shelbyville residents who now live in Glenburn, N. D. Mr. and Mrs. Wissing have a legion of friends who are always glad to hear from them, and who will enjoy the following letter: Glenburn, N. D., Oct. 29, 1917. Editor Democrat, Shelbyville, Ind. Dear Sir: Enclosed find check to renew my subscription to the Demo crat. We are living in a little town located 35 miles south of the Ca nadian line. ‘The land around here is of a rich, black loam and perfect ly level. It’is a fine farming coun try. The summers here can not be ex celled, as there always is a nice cool breeze. The nights in summer are great, as they are cool enough to use a cover, with which to sleep. The days in summer time are long enough so that you can get in a good day’s work, as the sun rises at 4:30 a. m. and sets at 8:30 p. m. You can read fine print outdoors as late as 9 o'clock. In the winter time the days are very short, the sun rising at 8:30 a. m. and going down at 4:30 p. m. We can get in only two meals a day in winter time. We are in a German and Nor wegian community and they have treated us in a kindly manner. We have purchased a 160-acre farm since we have been out here, and we will move on it in the spring. At present, I am working in a general merchandise store and will continue the work until spring. Everything is very high out here. I see by the Democrat you have been having some disagreeable weather, but the people of this com munity are coming to town on bob sleds. We had a six-inch snowfall on Oct. 16, and it looks very much as if it is going to stay on until spring. If it does, it will be a long and hard winter for the farmers, for feed is scarce and the crop was short. We have a fine school system and plenty of churches. You, people back east have a wrong idea of the win ters out here. The thermometer gets down to 40 and 50 below zero, but still you do not feel the cold as much as you do in zero weather. There are a number of Indiana people out here and we would like to see more, for there is plenty of room and plenty of chances for them to make good. We want to be remembered to the Democrat force and to all of our Shelby county friends. Yours very truly, MR. AND MRS. FRED WISSING.
