NO GOOD ItKASON.The whiskey dealers of Richmond and other cities have been holding meetings and passing resolutions in opposition to the Harbour-Quaries bill, before the Con rent ion. We have Dot seen, as yet, a single good‘ in why the Con* veulion should not p**a 0i make the law*1st. They say U wni hurt their business. Well, if their business is such as to be objectionable to h majority of the voters, then that biisi-uess aiuat hurt some one besides the dealer. If a dealer can show that hia business does not hurt more people, especially women and children, * then he can have a right to have the State protect him, but if his business is injurious to more people than the | number benefited, why, don’t ask protection. We presume, where one . is benefited from ten to a hundred 1 are hurt,2nd. They say if the bill becomes lt;a law then the business will be ' forced into the slums of the cities. We consider that plea a strong argu- ' rocnt in favor of the bill. It is an admission by them that a ma- ! jority of the respectable people and 1 localities do cot want whiskey sold 1 close to them, and shall not have a j word to euy as to its not being sold near them. The State must allow one to sell in a respectable location, ! even though it is known and acknowledged by all that a majority of the citizens do not Wish it sold there, i his point was, and is, their strongest point, while we contend it is a strong point in favor of the said bill. They also say when this business is forced iuto the slums some will visit j the slums who do not now visit j them. Some few may, but we venture * to say a great many will stay away. 1 But, even admitting some will go, it \ will be far better to let a few visit those places than force the business on to a majority who do not want it. 1 Certainly no more will visit the slums than now visit the saloons, while the saloons will and cannot to placed where a majority of the citizens ( object to their being placed. We still urge that the Convention 1 make this bill one of our State laws and believe a very large majority of the citizens will thank them for the 1 aw.—West Point Plain Dealer.
