King of ,By HollisReeves. Thursday, October 21,* the Ogdensbiirg Community Player hasted a '.performance by Carlos Montoya and the Syracuse Symphony Pops Orchestra, conducted by Calni Custer. The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra receives grants from tee state and federal . governments to bring performance^ such as this to outlying communities...Carlos Montoya is considered the world’s greatest Flamenco guitarist. Flamenco is a style of music of the gypsies of Southern Spain. It was largely influenced by the Modrs who once occupied this region for hundreds of years. The principle instrument of this music is the guitar, of ten accompanied by castanets and people ,t‘piaying palms.” Hie mark of agood flamenco guitarist is to be able to improvise on a central^ ‘heme.The concert began with ;three numbers by the. Pops orchestra. Following this Carlos Montoya performed, his “Sweet Flamed-ca” which is his own composition and is a musical, interplay . between the. guitar . and the symphony orchestrla.After abrief intermission Montoya played four traditional Flamenco songs one of . which deserves particular note* “La Saeta.” The Saeta is played during the Holy Week in Seville.: Montoya recreates the processions which occur during the Holy Week. One can distinctly hear the drums, the corbnets and the parade of people coming and then fading away in the distance.1Receiving two ' standing ovations, the King ? of Flaiftenco returned to play an encore and left saluting the audience and waving his guitar.
