A Tm ndeh Wiiibtle.—We have on j two or three occasions referred to the ; importance of establishing effectual Fog .Signals or Alarms at the prominent points on our coast, when there is a nr- I rcssify for their being seen to he passed 111 safety hy tint igators. And we, also, in the same connection, alluded to the mass of testimony which has been fur-nihi lt;1 us to show that the Fog vY histlec.tn he heard against the wind, and through the surf, when hells had proved of no un(* whatever at such places.— Heaver Tail Light, is, for instance, one of the cases in ijmtiuii. We wish now to speak more particularly of a very important enterprise which we understand is contemplated, and which, if carried into execution; will do more to proll 1 our const, than even the Light IIou e is they already exist. We undcr-Ktamlgthnt the matter has been fully explained to the Collector, and that it meets his approval. It is simply this :to attach horse-power to a machine for Mowing Mabeli’: Air Whistle, at Heaver Tail, and to employ a very large Whistle which to resemble thunder, and which ran he heard at least ten miles. We understand that the engineer.' of the several steamers have pronounced this method entirely practicable, and say there is not a shadow of doubt hut what, under ordinary circumstances, stu b a Whistle, il blown under a high pressure of air. would most certainly be heard ten miles distant. The Collector inform* us that the inventor of the Air Whistle called on him tor estimates as to die cost of oil, per annum for Heaver Tail Light, and frond it to he about ftiM) gallons, which, in round numbers, would he, say, six hundred dollars. From an estimate made ; hy the keeper of that Light, we learn that lie is willing to furnish provinder for a horse, and superintend the machine for two hundred dollars per annum. Thin, therefore, would, of course, be the whole expence, per annum, that it | would cost the (•overmuch!, should they provide such a machine for Heaver Tail.\ -w. when we take into consideration the immense advantage to he derived from it. I*v vessels navigating this coast, tlx cost of keeping such a Signal tin re, sinks into comparative insignificance.— I its importance is. m fact, beyond all price : and we can hut hope that our navigation and coinnn reiul friends, ev- , » rywhere, will be made to know and feel ^ I the importance of having the (iovcru-inent support this Thunder Whistle there, that its tones m.iy he heard when fogs, snow and storms render Lights unavailing. We all help pay tor it. then why should not the llovernmeiit give iih this means of protection, which is so practical, so economical and so ctlectuul.The*-** Machines have proved them rlv. s of eminent service in producing ound. when propelled by hand labor | alone, and. in fact, any degree of press- 1 lire can begot up by this means; but »q it w ill cost but a trifle more to use
