Jack Cadman being honored by MADDJack Cadman, the county’s first forensic scientist and longtime Fullerton resident, will be honored posthumously Wednesday at a special luncheon hosted by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) at the Richard M. Nixon Library in Yorba Linda.The salute coincides with MADD Orange County’s 17th Annual Law Enforcement and Prosecutor Recognition Luncheon.Cadman’s wife of 56 years, Evelyn, and his family willattend the sold-out event.A graduate of Fullerton Union High School and UC Berkeley, Jack Cadman was hired by Sheriff James Mu-sick in 1948 to start the county’s crime lab. The operation started in a converted jail restroom and was accredited before the FBI opened its lab.For 10 years, Cadman worked alone, honing his craft.The biggest single operation of Orange County’s early lab was conductingblood alcohol tests on suspected drunken drivers. In 1957, 1,276 tests were completed. A finding of .15 percent or higher could result in a drunk driving conviction.In 1958, after eight months of diligent effort and working with Theron Johns of Beckman Instruments in Fullerton, Cadman developed a technique for measuring ethyl alcohol in the blood using Beckman’s gas chromatograph.The method was revealed to the world that year at the9th annual conference on analytical chemistry.A MADD official asked, “How can we explain, or even know, the extent of Jack Cadman and Theron John’s effect on human life? Police officers and prosecutors worldwide now know that a DUI charge can be conclusively proven, innocent people can be protected from prosecution and unknown tens of thousands of lives have not been lost or broken.
