Global smallpox threat increasing According to U.S. intelli gence sources, four countries including North acre Iraq are in possession of smallpox virus. The reports also showed Osama bin Laden used some of his money to promote small pox research along with other biological weapons. * These reports have prompt ed the U.S. government to con sider the vaccination of all U.S. citizens. But the vaccination could prove harmful. A common estimate is the vaccine could kill more than 300 people. President George W. Bush now has to take a stand, as his advis ers are split on the decision on whether or not to vaccinate. French prostitutes protest new solicitation law The French Parliament has passed legislature which states any prostitute can get up to six months in jail for simply standing on the street. The French government is calling the crime “passive solicita_ tion.” The French Government is also looking to revoke resi dence permits for all foreign prostitutes. More than half of the 15,000 to 18,000 French prostitutes are foreign immigrants from eastern Europe and France's former African colonies. There is fear among prosti tutes the new law will force them to conduct their business quickly and be more vulnera ble to the clients who do not want to use a condom. Unsolved southern crimes linked to sniper suspects The two Washington, D.C. sniper suspects have been linked to shootings in Alabama and Louisiana in Sept. One person was killed and another, injured—in the September 21 shootings in Montgomery, Ala. _ Louisiana charged sniper suspects John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo, Muhammad's teenage accomplice, in the murder and robbery of a beauty shop work er in Baton Rouge. Both shootings have been linked to the same .222-caliber Bushmaster used in the sniper attacks in the Washington, D.C. area. February shootings in Washington State are still under investigation as to whether they are part of the sniper attacks. Haitians seek asylum Two hundred Haitian illegal immigrants waded ashore in Miami after their 50 foot wooden freighter ran aground off shore of the Miami metro area. Coast Guard officials say the immigrants were spotted around 2 p.m. Immigrants ran onto shore and halted traffic for some large streets. The immigrants were detained by government offi cials and taken into custody. Rep. Carrie Meek (D-Fla.) went to Gov. Jeb Bush to press him into speaking to President George W. Bush to have the Haitian illegal immigrants treated the same way the gov ernment treats immigrants from Cuba, and other Caribbean Island nations. Immigrants who wade to shore are fisually allowed to remain out of custody while waiting notice of their asylum applications. Immigrants who are captured at sea are taken into custody and are usually deported. Recenti murder trial delayed The trial of a man charged with murdering a co-worker at Grand Canyon National Park has been delayed. Jeremiah Becenti, 21, had been scheduled to go to trial in Flagstaff Tuesday, but a judge rescheduled the trial to start Feb. 11. Becenti is accused of fatally stabbing to death Kim Quanimptewa, 30, in June 2001. Her body was found in Becenti’s trailer. His attorney has said several other people could have killed the woman. Becenti and Quanimptewa both worked, for the Grand Canyon’s concessionaire and are from the Navajo Nation community of Hotevilla. Recents is being held on $442,000 bond in the Coconino County Jail. Blood drive Thursday and Friday United Blood Service offi cials consider the current blood reserve inadequate, about 25 percent below satis factory levels. To aid the blood supply, a blood drive is being held at the American Legion Post, 204 W. Birch Street (behind City Hall). Donation hours are Thursday from 11 am. to 6 p.m.; and Friday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Estimated blood donations must be 650 a day to keep up and adequate blood supply. Reserve supplies are in an emergency for types O+, O-, and rare B- blood. Appointments can be made by calling 773-0084.
