The Man Who Is Supposed to Have Assassinated Cap tain Hoobler. THE EVIDENCE AGAINST HIM. What was at first surmised is now thought to be a certainty. The late Captain T. B. Hoobler of Vanceburg sed Henry D. Halbert some time ago had some business transactions In some way there was a disagreement as to the division of the money, and Cap tain Hoobler thought he got the worst of it. Shortly after this Halbert married a most estimable lady of Vanceburg, and then came Miss Alice Armstrong, resid ing in Cincinnati and to whom Halbert had been quite attentive, with a breach of promise suit against him for the sum of $50,000 This case has been pending in the Cin cinnati Courts for about a year, and among other phases of it was the attach ment by Miss Armstrong of some $2,500 belonging to Halbert, which was on de posit in one of the Cincinnati Banks. It is said that Halbert charged Captain Hoobler with telling Miss Armatrong where this money was, thus enabling her to attach it. Further, it is alleged that Halbert had been heard to threaten vengeance on Hoobler for his interference in this case. The above circumstances are given as connecting Halbert with the cruel assas sination of Captain Hoobler at his home in Vanceburg on Tuesday evening, de tails of which have been printed in Tax report. Corroborative of the latter statement are the facts that Halbert took all the ready money he had in the house when he left home; that he crosed the river below Vanceburg about 9 o'clock Tues day night—a couple of hours after the as sault on Captain Hoobler—and that he hasn't been seen since. The accused is supposed to have gone to Cincinnati, as will be seen from the following telegram: Vapcannes, Kv. 3 Kr., oh sh. 1807, Onief Deltech, Cincinnati, O.: Arrem nn eee et aa = murder.
