Million-Dollar Project ^Circus Center To Be Built In Venice For World’s FairVENICE — Construction here of a million - dollar circa# entertainment center for the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair has been announced by Ringling drcue officials and Mayor Smyth D. BrohardDescribed as “ something entirely new, the building to be fabricated locally by G G Metals of South Venice will consist of a circular steel framework covered with a “skin” of synthetic fiber.The mammoth building, with 60.000 square feet under roof, will be larger by about £.000 square feet than the Rlngling Circus arena at the airport winter quarters here, it will seat 5,000 persona.Cyril Tucker and William Lindh of the Lindh-Tucker architectural and engineering firm here were the designers and engineers forthe new structure.William (Bill) Perry, assistant to circus executive vice president Art OonceUo, said a contract has been signed with the World's Fair management by the Continental Circus Inc. to produce the prtnci-| pal entertainment at the 1964-65 jexposition. And Perry compared j the attraction with Billy Rose’s Aquacade which was the principal I entertainment at the 1939 World’s Fair.I Perry said the type of ehow to! be produced will be a continental-! type one-ring circus performance land he added that the contract 'also calls for an old-fastfuoned circus parade to be ukaged daily through the fairgrounds.He said the lease provides for an 8®,000 - square foot site foe the building in a prime location.Gene Vercheski of G A G Metalssaid work on the building will begin very shortly. Vercheski said the structure will be completely erected at a site yet to be chosen at the airport and then disassembled for shipment to the World's Fair by February. 1964.Perry said the show probably will be oowtumed and rehearsed at the winter quarters here. He added that the acts which will perform there have not yet been selected.The “skin” covering the frame work will be furnished by DuPont and fabricated by Leaf Tent and Sail of Sarasota, which has been making tents for the Ring ling circus for many years.The building will be completely air conditioned and win be a self-contained unit with offices and dressing rooms bulk in The fair will open Wednesday. April 22, 1964, and run throughSunday, Oct. 18. 1964. It wiM reopen April 21, 1965, and closeOct. 17, 1965, for a total of 360 playing days.Perry said the management of Continental Circus is basically the same as Ring ling Bros, and Barnum Bailey Combined Shows, with John Rlngling North as president and Concello as executive vice president. One new principal of Continental Is Harry S. Dube of New York City as treasurer.Earlier this week, Mayor Brohard and circus officials announced the selection of Venice as a special operations site by Holiday on Ice, world’s largest producer of ice shows. The $200,000 project includes the creation, construction sod equipping of railroad transportation facilities for a new method of moving Holiday on Iceshows throughout the country.Three double railroad cars are to be converted into tunnel cars such am the circus uses to transport its equipment from city to city. Conversion of the cars and the manufacture of specialised tratler-wagons to fit them also wttl be handled by G 4 G Metals.Brohard, in announcing the latest World's Fair project, said, “This is but another example of the economic activity which has resulted from the Ring ling Circus locating in Venice.” And he addedthat, coupled with the Holiday on Ice project, “it will give Venice a strong boost from an economic gtandpoint as well •« publicity which cannot be purchased at any price.“I also want to commend the RingHng Circus and Its staff for the Interest they have taken in the community and for the fine spirit of cooperation they have displayed in civic projects oxch as the concert of the Naval Reserve Choir during the Navy Day celebration here.”
