Pioneers Roll Over Eureka Team With Score Of 12 To 0George Henderson Scores Both Touchdowns In First VictoryOf YearGeorge Henderson, backfield ace of the ShurtlefF gridmen, led the team to the first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon. October 30. The Pioneers played a hard, good game, and were justly rewarded by putting down the Eurekans with a score of 12-0. The score could have been larger if the team had worked as well in the first half as it did in the second . . . but that involves an if . . .The first score came in the third quarter when Henderson smashed through tackle and over the stripe. On the play preceding, Mawhinney had passed to Patrick and advanced the ball to the point near the Eureka goal.Ben Moore, lanky right end, made possible Henderson’s second gallop over the line in the last period of play. ?t was he who recovered the ball after a fumble on Eureka’s 20-yard line. Now Henderson began sweeping the ends for substantial gains. Soon the ball was resting on the half-yard stripe and a penalty on the Eureka-ites advanced it half that distance farther toward the boal. On the next play Henderson again took the ball and very easily tramped through the Eureka line for the second six points of the game. The Shurtleff line looked better in this game than it has all season .... those well-known holes were really conspicuous by their absence. Herb Hall, who has been kept out of the game by a leg injury, played a very fine game at halfback. Henderson got off his usual number of those aweinspiring punts. The statistics show that the Eureka lads were outplayed by the Pioneer gridders. Shurtleff gained more ground in this game than it had in both its other appearances combined. The teams were pretty equal in weight, but Shurtleff did a good job of outmaneuvering the enemy. The Pioneers showed plenty of fighting spirit, and alertly took advantage of all scoring opportunities. The Shurtleff attack showed a great improvement and the well-coached eleven worked effectively as a unit to overcome the desperate defense put up by Eureka. The Pioneer line and backfield seemed to work as a coordinated machine which swept the opposition out of the way.The maroon and gold gridmen have fought hal'd all year .... win or lose . . . . and now that they have one victory they are going to continue to improve; they are going to prove that they can stand success as well as defeat .... which is sometimes harder than the lads realize.LineupsSHURTLEFFEUREKAPatrickL.
