Ferdinand Schaffer of Blue Island Pre paring History of Families Who Redeemed the Low Lands and Prairies of Calumet District Early Settlers and Those Who Can Furnish Correct History of this Vicinity Are Urged to Help in Interesting Work—Mistakes in Some Names and Many Names Not Yet Reg istered—Here’s an Article that Will Interest Our Readers The following historical sketch is reprinted from the Cal umet Index, Mr. Carl Morgan, editor. The Pointer is sure it will interest many of our readers. As explained below, Mr. Schapper is preparing a history of the early settlers of this section and if you can help him correct the errors and omissions do so at your earliest convenience: “Some day the history of this terri tory will be written in capital let ters.” That was the statement of a far-sighted man who early saw the advantages of settling on ‘‘The Hill,” near the great car works and the great lake behind them. And the old plank road, with its crooked turn, its mud and its clay, was the inspiration that led the “early Dutch settlers” to settle here and start what today stands foremost in the minds of Chicagoans as the “com ing port,’ the Calumet region. But the Calumet region grew even more than the early Dutch settlers had dreamed of. Men came, saw and conquered the trials that always face the newcomer into strange and bar ren lands. The names of men and their off spring never die, however, and it has remained for one man—Ferdinand Schapper of Blue Island—to compile the “Calumet Region Dutch Family Tree” of early settlers, which this newspaper herewith submits to its readers, asking for corrections should the list be incorrect, or should better information be available. Mr. Schapper’s Letter. The following letter, written to our readers by Mr. Schapper, explains the “tree,” and is as follows: Some ten or twelve years ago I began to collect material to preserve the early history of Blue Island, also the names of its residents from 1834 to 1860. Later I concluded to extend the collection of names of the early settlers 3008 to include the whole territory that in the early days was tributary to Blue Island. This terri tory includes the present townships of Worth, Palos, Orland, Bremen, Rich, Bloom, Thornton and that part of Calumet south of Ninety-fifth street and west of Lake Calumet and the Grand Calumet River. When com pleted, this history will not be for sale. Only four or five copies will be issued, one of which will be placed in the Chicago Historical Society and the other in the several public libra ries in this vicinity. In addition to the mere names of these pioneer settlers I have—when possible — obtained a short family sketch of each—where they came from, where they lived, their occupa tion, who their children were, whom these children married, etc. The following list contains the names of all the natives of Holland tat settled in and near the present Roseland, and in the vicinity of the present South Holland from 1847 to Isleo; also the names of others besides natives of Holland that lived in and near the present Roseland during the same period and before that I have been able to obtain. Of those marked with an (X) my information is incom plete, and I shall be glad to receive further information from anybody. Undoubtedly errors and omissions will be found in this list, and my ob ject in making this list public at the present time is to give those inter ested in this matter an opportunity to make such corrections as may be necessary. I shall be pleased to call on anyone that desires to make corrections, ad ditions, or revise his own family sketch. F. SCHAPPER. 178 New street, Blue Island, TN.
