That all its rxalt; t ions won -met iimn or less wlt; 11, proves tin* i ITicicney of tin* company with which Mi. M tpllt; son is now playing to liis cheap-priced public. In vmvv o| this, \vc may well ask why opera is Ftill considered an aniu.-c-mcnt for tin* fashionable few, and possible, save during live lt;r six weeks ii: each year, only wln*n “society” is in town; Monday’s performance calls for little remark, the music brine well known, and the artists familiar in their respective charnel« is. Once moia' Mdlle. Titiens made a great impression as I’amina, and again Mdlle. lima di Murska created a sensation by her brilliant singing of the airs allotted to the Queenof Night. “ (*li angui d’inferno” was, of course, enthusiastically rcdcmandcd. Madame Siniro was as excellent, as ever in the lole of Pupagcna ; while Signor Cotogni as Papngenn, Signor Bettinias Tamino, and Signor Antonucci as Sarastro, lt;1 id aeeeptahle service. The minor characters were all fairly sustained, and the chorus sawg well ; hut, per contra., the l and left a good dlt; al to desire a result for which Signor Bevignani must be held responsible. The opera on Tuesday was “ Lucre/in Borgia,” and on Thursday “ 11 Trovat ore ” had its inevitable hearing; Mdlle. I it iens playing the heroine of both works in her own unapproachable way. Details of representations Ao familiar would waste our space. Tonight (Saturday) Weber's “ Obcron ” is to be given for the first time at Covent Garden. The Saturday concerts at the Crystal Palace go bravely on in all respects; but chiefly as regards the performance of Beethoven’s works. On Saturday war]; the Fourth Symphony was played, as also was the Second Pianoforte Com eito; Miss Zimmermann distinguishing herself greatly us the soloist. At. last week's concert the throe “Leonora” overtures (given in order and in close succession), the symphony in C minor (No. o), and the overture to 44 Fidclio,” made up a programme of rare attraction and drew an immense audience, who had no reason for complaint, even though Mr. Sims Reeves was too unwell to sing the 41 Liederkreis,” as intended. We understand that the “Leonora” overtures wore hoard together for the lirst time in England on this occasion ; and there was a general eagerness to note how the master had developed his original idea as shown in No. 1 to the imposing proportions it assumes in No. Nothing could be hotter than the performance of the overtures or than that of the symphony, and every amateur present enjoyed a remarkable treat. The musical societies are reviving from the sleep of summer, and preparing to begin a new campaign. On Monday week the Monday Popular Concerts resume, with the lirst of a series of Beethoven concerts, in honour of the master’s centenary, and with Madame Norman-Neruda as iirst violin. Mr. Baruby's forces are hard at work upon Mr. Benedict's new oratorio, “ St. Peter,” which is to bo produced about the middle of December— the soloists engaged being Miss Wynne, Madame Patey, Mr. Sims Reeves, and llerr Stockhausen. The St. Thomas’s Choral Society, under Herr Rundeggcr, have in rehearsal Mr. F. 11. Cowell's cantata, “The Rose Maiden,” about which report speaks highly. Last, not least, the Sacred Harmonic Society takes the field on the 21th inst., with “Judas Maccabeus,” to be followed, on Dec. 1G (the eve of Beethoven’s birthday), by a performance of the immortal composer’s mass in C and “ Mount of Olives.” Very soon, therefore, musical enthusiasts will be suffering from an vmbarras de richtssc. -NEW MUSIC.
