Cloths I had on exhibition at my appointed plate in the Fair. 4 very auspicious person might think that Baxter Co. or Mr. *oje had Indulged a little unfair practice in this matter.I will here remark, in reference io Committee No. P?, whose favorable consideration Baxter 4 Co. so happily obtained, that I have no desire to “ifnimb'o” abont their doiugs. I do not think that examining committees or the general officers are specially blamable. Their duties are multifarious and arduous in the extreme, and, withal, their labors on such occasions are but poorly requited. I believe that a very large proportion of the difficnlties that occur'at our great industrial exhibitions ore caused by the etforts of unscrupulous, intriguing exhibitors to obtain awards to which they ure not entitled, and by whom the officers arc misinformed and misdirected or misled. But it is asserted that Committee No. yS, prior to making any awards for Mill Furnishings, etc., examined all articles of the same description on the Fair ground.” Either my-self or my representative was in attendance at my stand constantly, and lam not aware that my goods were examined bv any CommitU» excepting the Committee on Miscellaneous Manufactures (llGj and by Mr. Chairman Hughes of 114, who visited mr stand at a late hour on .Saturday, the last day of the Fair. It is only just that I thould acknowledge that I received honorable treatment from Committee No. 11G, w ithout having to nip down” the gentlemen u bo composed it.In the matter of Bolting Cloths, Baxter 4 Co. profess to have exhibited samples of different varieties, “including Dufour 4 Co’s and the Dutch Anker brands”—thus conveying the impression that there arc two different varieties named respectively 14 Dufour A CoV* and “ Dutch Anker,” when in fact there is only the on* Dufour A Co’s old Dutch Anker” brand. They clam an award for “Dutch Anker” in contradistinction to Dufonr’s,” and represent the said award as the result of a fair and careful comparison of cloths 1The letter of Mr. Hughes, given below, explains that his Committee had not an opportunity to examine my samples of genuine—and the only genuine—Dutch Anker Bolting Cloths, which are and ever bave been manufactured by Dufour k Co., and by them only—the brand originating with them many long years ago, and this cloth naving always maintained the character of superiority overall other bolting cloths made. There are two other descriptions of bolting cloth—“Bodimer’s,” now solu in this city by J. T. Noye, and 44 Livingston’s” sold by Baxter k Co., which arc sometimes palmed nj-on inexperienced purchasers as of tlie “ Dutch Anker” brand. Baxter k Co., do not deal in the Dufour cloth. They recently bought a small quantity of it, of the Common” quality, which they have used for pretended comparison with tlieir best Livingston cloth, and a strip of which was perhaps sent by them to the Fi ‘Baxter says the “bloc ribbon” was placed on the “ Dutch Anker;” but Mr. H. nas informed me that he pieced it on tbe “ Dafour1 cloth. Both gentlemen saying truly, it seems that the common quality of “ Dufour’s Dutch Anker” must have taken the award of merit in preference to Baxter’s best sample of the Liv-ingatou cloih; but as the latter description is the only kind Baxter 4 Co. sell, they would have the public believe that it of the “Anker” brand. The samples shown by the Baxter firm consisted merely of strips^ about ISi inches wide by 21 feet long, on w.tirninerenZl^slrZpA or distinguishing mark wJtaUtir. If the examiner asked of what brand was Miior that strip, Messrs. B. 4 Co. might be expected to answer us suited their purposes. Upon such a showing of bolting cloths, made atciy from the Fay, without comparison with other samples which were on exhibition at the Fair, Messrs. B. 4 Co. ask an award of merit I Nonsense. The special attention of the reader is directed i the lollowiog letter from W. C. Hughes, Esq., of Dayton, Michigan. Mr. Hughes enjoys a high reputation throughout the country as a uiiller of large experience and intelligence and of unquestionable integrity. He exposes several of the statements of Baxter 4 Co., and most emphatically endorses the cloth exhibited by me us being the genuine Dutch Anker brand which has so long enjoved the reputation of superiority over all others:LETTER Fit Oil .MR. nUOUES.Dxrxu.x.Otf. 13.13!?.Class lJt. tnrwuded to tb«* prtper cfficarat the Trtmont Hou#eluyourc'tv. and at my own expense.
