A FATAL TRAGEDYWILLIAM DOW, OF AL3EA, IS KILLED WITH A MUSKET SHOT AT THE HANDS OF HIS BROTHER ALMAN.Early Tuesday moraine; groups of men stood on the strict corners discu33ing the tragic shooting affray that had occurred at* Alsea during the previous afternoon. All the particulars of the tragedy that had been received at that time was the statement of Alman Dow, who had arrived at a late hour 011 the previous evening, and given himself into tho custody of the sheriff. His statement has been corroborated by several of the resideuts of that section, who have been in the city during the week. The Dow family are well known in this city, and William had the general reputation of being of a very disagreeable and quarrelsome disposition, and had the name of being on the shoot. Old grudges had existed between the brothers for a number of years, and William who had been absent from the Al-sea settlement for some time, recently returned, and on Monday accompanied by a younger brother, Prentice, went to Alman’s residence with the ostensible purpose of doing him up,fas he had been known to make murderous threats on previous occasions, and Almaiv feared the worst. The two brothers soon provoked a quarrel with Alman, and a rough and tumble fight took place between tho latter and Prentice, while William held Mrs. Dow to prevent her from sounding au alarm or making any interference. Prentice was getting the worst of the battle and Mrs. Dow and her four little children were screaming with terror at the top of their voices. William told Prentice to stand back and give him a chance, and quick 03 a flash Alman grabbed a musket off the bed and discharged its contents into William’s face, who fell to the floor apparently dead. Mr. and Mrs.ShufF, the parents of Mrs. Dow, who live but a short distance, arrived on the scene immediately after the shooting, advised Alman to proceed immediately to Corvallis and give himself up to the authorities, which he did leaving his horse at Philomath and walking the rest of the way, and arriving in this city at a late hour, he aroused Deputy Sheriff Helin from his slumbers and gave himself into custody. Alman Dow is spoken of by his neighbors, as being a peaceable and ludustrious citizen. Word was received here that the shot had proven instantly fatal, ami Justice Davis went over Wednesday, to hold an inquest.Acting Coroner Davis returned late Iasi niyht, but we wen? unable to get the verdict of the coroner’ajjuryhip tq^-tho time going to press.
