Publisher threatens rug merchant facing sex chargesAfter the manager of a Persian rugstore was arrested on suspicion of sexual misconduct, his wife said the publisher ofa Persian American magazine threatened her with extortion.Laguna Beach police arrested JavadMostafavi, the publisher of Puyam-e-Ash-ena, at his Irvine home Oct. 19. Mostafavi, 70, is suspected of demanding $3,000from the wife of Saied Maralan and threatened to publish Maralan's booking photo on the cover of his magazine, Lt Jason Rravetz of Laguna Beach police said. Maralan, manager of Sirous and Sons in Laguna Beach, faces multiple counts of sexual misconduct and remains in custody. The Orange County District Attorney's office recently added more charges against him after three more women came forward.Mostafavi was arrested on suspicion of extortion and taken to Orange County Jail, Kravetz said. He was released on $20,000 bail.Since initial media reports, seven additional women have accused Maralan of sexual assault, bringing the total number of potential victims to 11. Charges now include sexual battery, rape, attempted rape, distributing pornography to a minor and indecent exposure..
