A PROCLAMATION SENT TO PEOPLE BY GOVERNOR STEPHENS-Whereas, the representatives of the great nations of the world will meet in solemn conference in Washington. D. C., to consider disarmament and allied questions on Armistice Day,November 11, a day sacred to the whole world as marking the ending of the bloodshed of the World War, and,-Whereas, this conference has as its purpose the making impossible of another such war,-Now, therefore. I, William D. Stephens. Governor of California, call upon the citizens of this commonwealth to assemble in their several places of worship on Sunday, Nov. 6. 1921, to petition the Divine Blessing and guidance upon the deliberations of this conference to the end that peace and prosperity may be assured to all nations.(Signed)•WILLIAM D. He is reported to have said that there are not twelve men in the world who understand him. I can only suggest something of the startling claims he has made, reminding you at the same time that not all his claims are yet fully accepted. Many men are at work attempting to understand him and to check up the physical experiments necessary to sustain his theory.I have this caution, beware of the person who knows all about Einstein and is ready to tell it. One feels quite certain after having read a single book in explanation of the theory. A single magazine article seems to leave nothing to be desired in the way of explanation, but the reading of a number of hooks leaves a different impression. depriving one of the atmosphere of assurance. Perhaps the simplest book of all is Einstein's own little work now translated in English under the title Relativity.”CORRELATED FACTS It would be too much to credit Ein stein with the invention of the whole system for he has lather correlated facts and theories in a field where other men have preceded him In most fruitful effort. On some of those men he has been dependent. Notable among these is Dr. Michelson, famous for the Michelson Morley transformation theory, which plays such a part in Einstein's system. Imrenz is another whose name should be honored along with Einstein. In the field of mathematics, Whitehead in England has. it is suggested, done work quite as far reaching and important as that of Einstein. In the field of Philosophy Bowne in America has previously taken Einstein’s advanced position. However this may be, Einstein has at least capitalized and gathered about his own name theories that may mark as profound a transition in the world of physics and astronomy as the discovery of the Newtonian law of gravitation or, as some may extravagantly claim, as epoch-making as the announcement of the Copernican astronomy.
