Louis K. Ans-parher, whose comedy of modern life, The tJnehastenert Woman/' la being presented for the first time In New York, at the Thirty-ninth Street Theatre, haa aeen the result of his work greeted with warm applause. To those who are not averse to seeing the facta of life presented as they are. the play contains much that la delightful, especially as most of the parts are well acted. Not since Kleanor Duse, at her best, showed us her Wlft of Claude has such a ruthless and unhesitating analysis of a vile, vicious and yet fascinating woman been revealed here as Miss KinIIy Stevens showed the audience in the character of Caroline Knolys, the un-chastened.Caollne is a spoiled child of fortune —a cerature whose instinctive vice has. till the pl»y begins, not been redeemed by even passion. She Is of the same breed as I’revost's horrible demi-vierges. but far more charming, In, of course, an evil way.Provoking, pretty, selfish, shameless and utterly unscrupulous, she plays with fire and loves her sins, as it would seem for their own sake. Despite a half-rupture with her wealthy husband, a protectionist mill owner, whose Intimacy with a young woman named Kmily Madden haa become known to her. she has been clever enough net to allow her fancies and caprices to compromise her. Until, one day, she meets a poor, weak fool, a struggling architect, Lawrence Banbury, and falls In love with him.On her return from Europe Caroline is saved from arrest for smuggling laces and jewels Into New York, by the intervention of her erstwhile rival, Kmlly Madden—now betrothed to Michael Krellin. a wild Idealist. This fact does not deter her later on from shat-terng Emily’s hope of married bliss. But firstly and chiefly, she devotes her wit and charms to winning her architect away from his devoted wife, who is a settlement worker. She sows the seed which is to make of Lawrence Banbury her lovesick satellite, and as she hopes, to part him from his Hllde-garde.But. as Krellin, quoting a great thinker, tells us. God Is a great humorist. And some—not all—of Caroline’s artful schemes are foiled. When the curtain comes stis is still un-chastened Her husband has not done as Dumas' Claude did. Nor could he do so. For he has lost the right to rid the world of Caroline.Miss Stevens' temperamental performance of the unohastened Mrs. Knolys is vividly contrasted with the aauve, distinguished Impersonation of her husband by H. Reeves Smith. U Is a highly effective piece of work. Miss Christine Norman and R. Hassard Short are excellent as the Sanburys. and Louts Bennlson does well as the explosive Krellin.* * *
