KILLED A WENDIGO.* Two Cat Ukr Indian* to Ik TrM IaWlmttpri for H»r- cria* Their Okt-| Rat Portage. Oct 2k—R. G. Ctoasa-, teriam, of the Ooaimjon police, Ottawa, and A. R. J Bauuatyue, Indianageut at Lac Seul. are in town withthree Indian* in their custody. Two of* the Indians an* caarged with shooting J their chief last winter at Cat Lake, about 330 miles northeast of Dixiorwie. The story told by the two prisoners is essentially as iollows: The chief ofi the Cat Lake Indians called Abw ah* sa keh-ruig, became a wendigo, or in- j s sane, and ordered the prisoners to shoot t him. A council ot the tribe was called- and they discussed the matter for two j. davs, when thev arrived at the ccnclu- jI | W T IP* sion that the chief’s orders would have* to be obeyed. The wendigo lay down in his wigwam and indicated with his hand where they were to shoot him. :t After he was dead wood was heaped j upon his body and the tire kept going ; ■ for two days, thereby, according to the j i j belief of the Indians, thoroughly des- j troying the evil spirit of their chief. The matter was reported to Mr. Ban- natyne, but as the Cat Lake tribe are 1 k non treaty Indians, special legislationi was passed last July to cover the case. ‘ i j Constable Cnamberlain went to Lac i Seal, where Mr. Bmuatyne and two' j gnirtes joined him. and they made the : j lt;00 mile journey in twenty days. Thearrest of the two Indians was effectedj without trouble and when seen by ft jcorrespondent yesterday smoking their pipes at the Kussel house they appeared to rather enjoy their captivity. The third Indian was brought along as a witness. Two of them had never seenmJ; y' Fa railroad or train before and only one of them had ever seen horses or cows. They are magnificent specimens of the ! red man and are above the average of their race in intelligence. jThey are being held her41 for an j order to take them to Winnipeg for,1 trial, as the assizes are over here, ibeI - ;■ Igreatest wonder of the prisoners since ;1 their arrival here has been how the white man gets his living They say | i everyone seems to be walking about j doing nothing. By doing something their idea is hunting or fishing, j Messrs. Bannatyue and Chamberlain;I say they are under great obligations to J. W. Anderson and Robt. Arnett, ofI Ij the Hudson Bay posts at Lac Seul and Cat Lake respectively, for assistance on ' the trip. !
