The first meeting of the 1983-84 season of the Meridian terfaith Council met in the wer hall of Avoniea United church Wed., Sept. 21st, with it, members and visitors pre sent. President Louise Jones, tarbuck, chaired the meeting. ‘The Rev. Jim Hatherly, Meri jan Charge, and Pastor onard Corbett and his wife of St. Paul Lutheran witch, Brunhild,“were wel med as new members of uncil. Ideas concerning the Spring event for 1984 were discussed, and a committee was appointed to formulate plans to put before the council at the next meeting. Members of the committee are Jim Hatherly, Leonard and Pat Corbett, Anne Masse and Jean Johnson, Farewells were said to Pastor and Mrs Gordon Hendrickson of Trinity Lutheran, Starbuck, who are leaving for a three point charge in the Lake Elman area of Saskatchewan. Pastor Durkson voiced the apprecia tion of the council for the faithful work so willingly given by the Hendricksons for seven years. They were presented with a farewell gift of wheat weaving made by Adele Hall, and a book. » Council will meet every two months, with the next one to be held at Starbuck United Church, November, 16th, at 7:30 p.m. Lunch included a decorated cake in honor of the Hendricksons. Hostesses were Florence Carswell and Doris Magarrell. Open house! Was held at Gladys Manness’ home Sunday, October 9th. The event was Mrs Haverstick’s sister's birthday. Mrs. Margaret Trimble of St. Louis, Missouri spent some time with her sister Mrs Edith Haverstick who is now in Oakview Place Nursing Home in Winnipeg. The two ladies spent most of the time with Gladys and also to enjoy the country. Domain friends were happy to be able to visit these two friends. Mrs Trimble receiv ed many lovely cards. 90th birthday Mrs A.J. (Inger) Manness celebrated her 90th birthday Oc tober 1st at Holiday Nursing Home, Winnipeg. Close family members helped in the celebra tion, Mrs Manness received numorous congratulatory cards which she enjoys. A union service was held in Avonlea United Church Thanksgiving Monday at 7:30 p.m. with about 654 people in attendance. The Rev. Jim Hatherly, Mrs Jean Rhynard of Ferndale, Alan Wilson of San ford, Mrs Livingston of Star buck, and Mark Magarrell of Avonlea, said prayers and read from the Bible. Both the senior and junior chairs were in atten dance. Coffee and sweets were served in the lower hall follow ing the service. Gary Magarrell was home, in Domain, for the Thanksgiving weekend. While here he con ducted the Sunday services in the Avonlea and Sanford United Churches. Following the holidays he continued on to Toronto for business meetings. Brian Sim was a patient in the Health Science Centre for over a week in October as he has not been well this summer. He has now returned to his home in Crestview and is recuperating. We want Brian to know we are all thinking of him and wishing him a speedy recovery. U.C.W. meeting Sixteen members attended the October 3rd U.C.W. meeting at the home of June Loftus at LaSalle. President Marianne Litster was in the chair. Treasurer Carolyn Bumstead reported, expending June netting pe Tol for the new addition of the church $1,853,, bathroom vani ty, mirror and lighting $518., Observer for every family $240,, MS allocation $37.50. The Sunday School reported on the fall kickoff weiner roast held at Don and Daphne Johnson's. The children will participate in collecting for UNICEF on Halloween, Coming events to mark on Your calendar. A table has been rented for selling handicrafts at the recreation bazaar to be held at the Hall December 3rd. Han dicrafts and touch and take will be appreciated. A vote will be taken by all the women of the church November 6th following the church service re — holding the coffee party at Eaton’s or Domain Hall after 1984. Pros and cons are to be printed and circulated among members before the vote. Please come and vote! The Lord’s Day Alliance has changed its name to People for Sunday Association of Canada. Pity! The Christmas meeting and party will be held at Janice Har rison’s on Wednesday, December 7th. Lunch hostesses were Shirley Cole and Marianne Litster. We are happy to be able to announce our Nursery School at Domain is in full swing. Our former room in the elementary school was needed as another classroom. This of course is a good sign, that our school is growing and improving. However, it meant that the nursery school was out. Thanks to some determined parents lead by Bernie Dyck as president, they never gave up. Every possible room available was investigated. The Avonlea Church board consented to our renting the church basement. This is an ideal spot for our class of 12 boys and girls. We haven’t been on any tours as yet, except for a nature hunt of the Abe Enns yard to collect leaves for a future assignment. We investigated the pumpkin patch. This was of interest to the children with Halloween coming up, also being able to choose the biggest one for our party. Our nursery school teachers remain the same as last year, Zinova Sawisky,teacher,, Emma Enns - assistant, ~ 102nd birthday Mrs Della McManus of the Fred Douglas Home celebrated her birthday which was her 102nd in October. Her two sons and their wives Earl and Bess and Grant and Lee McManus of Portage, Indiana came to help celebrate. Earl McManus is 83 which was wonderful that he was able to come so far, Dorothy Parker and her family of Sanford and Al and Beth Livingston also attended, Mrs McManus is still fine and goes down for her meals. It is not often that we hear about anyone getting along so well and still en joying life. Those of us in this area who knew the McManus family wish her well. Sunday, October 16th two babies were baptized in Avoniea United Church with Rev. Jim Hatherly officiating. They were Charlene Alberta Sim, daughter of Don and Heather Sim, and Gregory David Rodgers, son of Roydon and Sandi Rodgers. October 17th our honorary member Comrade Larry Man son arranged for Ron Labbe and Faye Deluna to come out from Veteran’s Affairs to show slides for veterans and their descendants to learn more about the services and benefits that they are eligible for. In April 1981, the department launched a new program for veterans that presently are receiving disability pensions. The aim is to help veterans maintain and improve their quality of life, and to enable them to live independently in their own communities and if possible their own homes. Ser vices for which financial assistance is available fall into two groups — Home Care and Community Care. Around 20 interested Legion members from Domain and Sanford attended. Coffee and doughnuts and fellowship followed. President Cecil Manness acknowledged everyone on behalf of the Legion. Family members who attend ed the Johnson-Pengrew wed ding in Vancouver Oct. 8 were Sid and Helen Manness, Wan da Dryden, Barry and Susan Pitura, Ron and Patricia Man ness, Irvin and Pat Reschke. Murray Johnson is the eldest son of Lorne Johnson and the late Betty (Kosier) Johnson. Mr and Mrs Murray Johnson will make their home in Winnipeg. 95th birthday Saturday, October 1Sth J. B. Wiens celebrated his 95th birth day. Open house was held in the afternoon and early evening at the home of his son Bernard and Ruth Wiens at 580 Dalhousie St., Fort Richmond. Mr Wiens, though blind, en joyed visiting with many friends both from the city and his coun try friends. The J. B. Wiens family were pioneers of the Osborne district and he did a lot of preaching throughout his years. Those who attended were truly amazed at his memory. Five members of the Domain W.I. set off early Tuesday, Oct. 18th to attend a Central Regional Women's Institute Rural Women's Seminar. After the usual procedure of registra tion and coffee the meeting opened at 9:30. Crystal City is quite a drive from Domain but as our Institute was joined with their Institute this year and we had not got together we decid ed to go. Guest speaker was Mona Cornock, Home Ec. of the area and she showed slides and gave a very good talk on “wills't. There were lovely displays of crafts and sewing, also one on Christmas decora tions which were all hand made. After a long lunch and friend ly visiting we were shown slides of the Associated Country Women of the World Con ference that was held in June in Vancouver. Also tapes of the wonderful choir which was formed from women from visiting countries. Mrs Eileen Brake of Boissevain, a past president of W.I. read the com mentary while Mrs Alice McLaren of Clearwater showed the slides. They were excellent and certainly enjoyed by us all. After coffee and filling out evaluations sheets we returned after an enjoyable day and a good trip. Sande Konechny opened a boutique shop in the store at Domain in October called “‘The Countryside Boutique’’. [tis a first for Domain. She has a good variety of items of all kinds and the Domain Store has taken on a decided new look. James Livingston, father of Al and Beth (Bower) Liv ingstone of Garden City passed away Sunday, October 6th and was buried October 19th with Rev. Roger York officiating. He was 97 years of age and has spent his last Years in a nursing home.” oy ° V.1L. notes The October meeting of the Domain W.1. was held on the 12th at the home of Pat Man ness, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Vice-president Mark Roberts chaired the meeting, with 11 members attending. Roll call had a Thanksgiving theme. The Domain W.1. song book is ready for the printers. Members will buy their own books, as well as for friends; anyone interested in buying books may contact Carol Pasiec2ke, Gwen Ross or Cheryl (Clayton) Manness before press time. More recipes are needed for the W.I. cookbook by the beginning of November. Anyone can send in recipes, you need not be a member. A bake sale will be held at Grant Park Shopping Mall Now. 4th, starting at 3 p.m. The Peace Gardens and the Adelaide Heodless Foundation will each receive $20 donations. Fifteen dollars was voted toward a retiring gift for Irene Grant. Winnipeg, who because of acute arthritis, has been forc ed to leave our institute work and is now confined to a Wheelchair. Following a long lunch and pumpkin pie, Rachel Bose, home economist, presented a video cassette recording of the Farm women panel discussion held in Carman last year. Four panelists discussed the ‘Role of the Farm Wife’; the expecta tions your family, your com munity and your business put on your life. Each of the panel members, all farm women, spoke on how they made deci sions in order to cope with their role. The two-hour discussion and evaluation proved very interesting. Lunch hostesses were Gladys Manness and Doris Magarrell. European vacation Dr. Robert Manness, Dr. and Mrs M. Fraser and Theresa Olenik have returned from a one month vacation in Europe. The doctors attended a medical conference in Monaco, along with 25 Winnipeg doctors. They toured Italy for two weeks visiting Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice etc. and France for one week. Both doctors are back at work in Morris. There will be a Remembrance Day Service held at the school again this year. The Domain Legion is sponsoring an essay and poster contest for the students. The winning entries will be submitted to Ottawa for a Legion national competition. Good luck children, Morris Progressive Conser vative Association held a meeting in the Brunhild Hall, Oct. 13, to select seven delegates and seven alternatives to the Provincial Leadership Conven tion, December 8-10 in the Win nipeg Convention Centre. Ap proximately 200 people attended, Clayton, Manness, MLA Morris constituency, is a leader ship candidate and was the guest speaker. He spoke on the need for strong leadership. Our pro vince, he said, is at a critical stage. The psychological makeup of Manitobans is changing, people are more prepared to face up to things, given the right leaders, we must learn to live within our budget; everything we do is on borrow ed money, he said. The Provin cal debt is $6,000,000, today, or $6,000, for every man, woman and child. We must face reali ty. We are well down the road to socialism, he said. Delegates elected were Angela Bunkowsky, youth delegate, Norman Manness, alternate, Elsie Steinke, woman delegate. Other delegates were Joan Olund, Ed Wiens, Andy Livingston, Paul Gauthier, Al Godkin. Jim Litster, Manitoba Pool Elevator agent at Domain was honored at a social evening wind smorgasbord dinner, Oet. 14th in the Domain Hall. Jim has been with us for 26 years. The royal board planned the affair and a large crowd attended, in cluding both Jim and Fran’s complete families. Presentations and speeches were made. Head office was represented by John Williamson, who presented a service plaque to Jim and a cut glass dish for Fran. A picture of the elevator was presented by John Dyck, former president of the local. Fran's daughters presented them with a colored picture of the elevator drawn by Pat Schnell, one of the daughters, and presented by the eldest daughter Wendy Manness. Other speakers were Sidney Manness, John Dyck, Gerald Dyck was M.D. for the evening. A comic skit was presented by Will Dryden and Craig Manness. Reminiscing and joking made for a Tun evening. The Ben Rempels have returned from a motor trip to Montreal then down through the U.S. to Pennsylvania, and other points. The Frank Wiens’ took a Cir cle Tour to the Maritimes and the New England States. A love ly time for a trip,
