My Dad brought me up on the idea so it never even occurred to me to be anything else,” Marcia Silvette stated in answer to one of the questions the interested people asked her at the Academy of Arts, last Tuesday afternoon.Miss Silvette studied art at John Marshall High School 1925-1928, under Mr. Frank Spear. She was art editor of The Record and The Marshallite and editor-in-chief of The Marshallite.Student at National AcademyAfter graduating from John Marshall, she wrent to the National Academy of Design in New York, where she studied art for five years with her father.Twenty Oil PaintingsMiss Silvette has made twenty oil paintings, twelve drawings, and two pieces of sculpture. Her “Girl in Green” won first prize, major, at the National Academy of Design, and she also won a major award on “Odalisque,” which is a nude with a strange oriental face. These two along with“Ahda”, a lovely painting of a Russian girl, are her favorites. The artist’s reproduction of facial expression is so accurate that it considered one of the best in the South.Portrait of Mr. HillMiss Silvette will soon begin work on a portrait of Mr. Albert Hill which will be presented to John Marshall by the class of ’20, of wrhich class Miss Mamie Auerbach was sponsor. This portrait will be unveiled, at an assembly some time in November.David and Marcia“My brother, David Silvette, painted the portraits of Madison, Lee, and Wilson in John Marshall’s Hall of Fame, and now I will be able to have the honor of being in that same gallery,” Miss Silvette smiled.“Every student and alumnus of John Marshall should feel great pride in the remarkable work of this young artist who just a few years ago was giving her time and talent to John Marshall,” Miss Eva Branch remarked after seeing the exhibit.
