Federal Officer, Ex-Con gressman and Others of Prominence Charged With Part in Whisky, Withdrawal Conspiracy. St. Louis, Nov. 2 — (7) — United States Attorney Curry today made public the names of thirty-nine per sons,Including prominent officials and politicians in St. Louis, In dianapolis and Cincinnati who were indicted at Indianapolis Saturday by a federal grand jury on a charge of conspiracy in the $1,800,000 Jack Daniel whisky withdrawal plot. Included in the lst was Imogene Remus, wife of the former Cincin nati bootlegger, who has become estranged from him since his re cent release from the Atlanta penli tentiary. Remus, who testified be fore the grand jury, was not in dicted. Others indicted Includer . Arnold J. Melimich, Collector of internal revenue for the eastern Missgouri district, Nat Goldstein Named. Nat Goldstein, former circuit clerk of St. Louis and one of the participants In distribution of the Lowden campaign fund of 1920. Jed Essen, former congressman and present St. Louis county re publican leader. Michael J. Kinney, St. Louis, state senator and democratic leader. William J. Kinney, brother of the state senator and former deputy under Collector Hallmich, and gauger at the Daniel ware house here during the time when conspirators are alleged to have been “milking” the barrels there. Lem Motlow, wealthy Tennessee distiller, who shot and killed a Pullman conductor on one of his trips here, but who was acquitted of charge of murder. ‘Tom Heffernan,an associate of Motlow in ownership of the whisky and one of the alleged participants in its sale to a syndicate backed by Remus. Henry S. Dahlman, the third partner In ownership of the liquor prior to its gale, John Marcus, former convict, who was arrested in Indianapolis on Christmas eve 1923 with an auto mobile load of Jack Daniel whiskys * Don H. Robinson, Thomas Mcl culiffe, Thomas F. McCafferty, Leonard Stone and Edward Mein inger, named by Remus as purchas ers of the whisky for $125,000 from Motlow and associates. Michael J. Whalen, democratic city committeeman and former al derman here. “Tony” Foley, notorious St. Louis county gambler and former convict, 2 Former Constables Indicted. Daniel O'Neil and Harry Levin, former St. Louis county deputy cons tables. Morris Multin, former St. Louis whisky dealer, and his brothers, Isadore Multin and Sidney Multin, John Connors, John Gehran, Mrs. Ada Gehran, George R. Landon, Edward J. O'Hare, Willam uck Ing, Robert BE. Walker, August Wal ter, Clifford Sampson, Carlisle Sampson, Frank Hoffman, Bernard Brink, George Hollis, Henry Strat ton, Ben Doncaster, Richard Fitz gibbon and a man named Houlihan, first name unknown to the grand jurors, 7 Alleged Overt Acts Cited. District Attorney Curry said capiuses would be issued at once, not only here, but at Cincinnati and Nashville, Tenn., and the defendants would be brought in to make bonds ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 for the appearance in federal court at Indianapolis Saturday at 10 a. m. The indictment specifically charges conspiracy to violate the Volstead act and sets forth seven al leged overt acts, including trans portation of some of the whisky to Indianapolis, culminating in the ar rest there of Marcus. His arrest brought the venue in the case in Indianapolis. Hellmich this afternoon sent @a telegram to President Coolidge tend ering his resignation as Internal revenue collaster, to take effect at the president's pleasure.
