PROMINENT SUFFRAGETTE. IS RAVALLI CANDIDATE FOR THE LEGISLATURE. Mrs. Maggie Smith Hathaway, who helped to make the persistent fight which finally won for the women of the state the right to do their own political thinking, is turning the talent she developed in former suffragette campaigns to a practical purpose. She is a candidate for the legislature in Ravalli county, and is conducting a campaign that is making the old time politicians of the Bitter Root sit up and take notice. Mrs. Hathaway is well known to the women of Montana. She is the kind of a woman who is not afraid to ‘make a speech from the tail end of a wagon, or from a soap box in a ‘crowded street corner. She is a stu dent of political affairs, and was prominent in the lobby which secured the passage of the mother’s pension and equal guardianship at the last session of the Montana legislature. Heretofore all her work has been done from the outside. From now on, clothed in the mantle of citizenship, she proposes to work for women from the inside. She manages a small ranch near Stevensville in the summer sea son and spends the winters lecturing on topics that further the cause of women. She hopes to become a states woman early in November.
