The name Gauley, which was first applied to the river and mountain, is of French origin, being a modification of the oldFrench word, Gaul.The first man to settle here was James H. McVey, and Neal McArthur,the present postmaster.As early as 1850 there was a frame church building then old and dilapidated. The Kanawha Michigan Railroad makes Gauley Bridge their southern terminus.General Wise, to prevent the Union General Cox,building in the very near future.
