JOSEPH S. LEWISJoseph Stuart Lewis was born in BuckinghamCounty, Virginia, January 13th, 1874. He is the son of J. S. and M. (Anderson) Lewis. His father diedwhen he was quite young and his mother marriedRev. T. H. Fitzgerald. In 1890 he came to Oakā€˜Hill with his mother and step-father, who had accepted a call to the pastorate of the Oak Hill Baptist church.He worked in the store of Jones Brothers at Oak Hill and soon embarked in the mercantile bus-iness for himself. Since then he has at various times owned a number of stores in Favette countv, in all of which ventures he has been successful. Also he has bought and sold coal lands and other real estate extensively.He was educated in the public schools. November 17th, 1897, he married Miss Ella Mahood,daughter of C. B. and Maggie Mahood, of Oake one son, Joseph Stuart, Jr., bornJanuary 1st, 1904. They live at Oak Hill.At present, Mr. Lewis is Vice President of the Merchants and Miners Bank, a nd President of the Oak Hill Hardware Company, both of Oak Hill. He is also President of the Angling,s Creek Coal Land Company, Director and Vice-President of Anderson, Lewis, Gray Co., incorporated, Richmond, Va., and member Board of Education of Fayettevile District. He is a Republican, Baptist and Shriner.
