In 1769 Augusta County was divided sby- a beginning at the Blue Ridge and running thence north fifty-five degrees west as far 'as the courtsof the two counties should extend.” This linecrossed the Greenbrier River about' six miles below the present; site of Marlinton, Pocahontas County, and crossed the Ohio near where the present town of Bellville, Wood County, now stands. All the land of the original Augusta County north of this line was .still called Augusta County andthat which was south was called Botetourt County. To give some idea of the vast extent -even pi Botetotirt County, a provision of ihe adt: ifiajf be quoted stating that “since people . living on the; •waters of the Mississippi River, will be very remote frorri the County seat, they will be einpt froin. the payment of taxes.”• ► .In 1772 Botetourt was divided by a line fi'/dowy? ing the Kanawha and New Rivers, the territory, northeast of these rivers to be called Botetourt County and that southwest, Fincastle County.Ill i776 Fincastle County was abolished and put. of it were formed the counties of Kentucky (now a slate), Washington and Montgomery.
