A meeting will be held in the Wakefield school house, near the old Cal ifornia road, in Kanwaka township, on Tuesday evening next, at 6 o'clock, for the purpose of effecting a permanent or ganization. All Good Templars of good standing in the county are earnestly re quested to be present and participate. Senator Povenoy is Iowa.—An Iown exchange tells us that Senator Pomeroy, when in Desmacines, a few days ago, gave a word of encouragement to the woman suffragints. He thinks the day is near at hand when the cause will triumph—when woman's right to vote, under the four teenth amendment to the Constitution, will be admitted; that it will not come by declaratory act of Congress, but through the courts. The Senator expressed his regrets that he was too late for the con vention, and the Indies no doubt fost a good speech, that they might have heard had the convention been a day or two later, or the Senator a little later in his arrival, Prnsoxan.—We had the pleasure of meeting, Saturday, Prof. Q. 10. T., the other day, we noticed at the depot of the A. 2 freight consigned to parties in Garnett and Lawrence. 'This is a low and roundabout way of getting freight, it neems to us, by way of the Indian Terri tory. Parties in Garnett and Lawrence having that freight will know where to ap ply—A. I. depot, Indian Territory.’ We reprint this for the benefit of our Lawrence and Burnett merchants, and at the same time to add our voice in de nouncing the practice of stealing freight, no matter from what point, and carrying it out of the way, at loss of time to owner and increased expense. We are glad to note that our Lawrence roads are more honorable, and conform themselves to le gitimate freights, and we would commend a similar course to the A. P. road, if it expects the patronage and good will of Kansas merchants. Knitting Macaine.—All mothers who have little feet to keep warm during the coming winter will be interested to know that they can get stocking a knit precisely like the good old-fashioned home knitting, at Mrs. Starrett’s music store, on Massa chusetts street. Mrs. Starrett keeps on hand the Lamb knitting machines, and also the Franz and Pope machines. Ei ther of these machines knite stockings or socks precisely like they are knit by hand, adaping the stocking perfectly, and knit ting a heel and toe complete. As all housekeepers know, such stockings are worth two or three pairs of woven ones. Mrs. Starrett employs two young ladies in knitting, and is now prepared to take or ders. Persons furnishing yarn can get their stockings and socks knit for from 20 to 35 cents a pair, according to the size. Sterne! of all sizes kept on hand for sase. Mrs. Starrett also has knitting machines for sale. To furmer a’ wives and daugh ters, and to persons living in small towns, these knitting machines offer great induce menta, as a method of earning money. An expert operator can earn $2.50 per day on a knitting machine. Kentecky Stnset.—This street has improved greatly within two years, by the residences Which have been erected upon it—much more by the church edifices which now grace it. ‘A large portion of the buildings now standing upon the western side of the ‘street have gone up in that time, and some of then are really elegant buildings. ‘So no one is Law rence more indebted for building enter pring, than to Mr. A. H. Fitch, who seems determined that no vacant lot shall exist on Kentucky street that he can get pos session of at a reasonable price. The cottages which he has more recently faced upon the street add very much to its beauty, while the handsome residences which have gone up under the eyes of Megara, A. Shaw, C. U. Cutler, Matt. Potter and Dey, give the street the front rank for neat and comfortable dwel lings. For church edifices it is still more marked, no leas than five being situated upon it, viz. the Baptist, Presbyterian, colored Methodist, Universalist and Ho man Catholic. The Roman Catholic chapel, when finished—which it soon will be— will present quite an imposing ap pearance, and Kentucky Street will for a long time to come be the ''church street’” of Lawrence. Ratification Meeting. A fine ratification meeting was held on Saturday evening, at Baldwin City. Capt. L. F. Green presided, and bir. Beeks was secretary. After several speeches, J. K. Goodin, Esq., introduced the following resolution, which was unanimously passed : _ Mesolved, That it is the sense of this meeting that the interesta of the county, as also the interesta of the party, will be beat subserved by giving our most hearty and cordial support to the regular ticket nominated by the Republican party at the late county convention. M. Ruth was arrested at her house, Saturday, as an accomplice in the murder of her hughred, as ‘* accessory before the fact’ The arrest was made about 4 o'clock, by Capt. Curnea and three Policemen. A thorough search was a made through the house, and a large num ek of papers, letters, memoranda, etc., taken way. One thing taken was a diary in which were a few interesting notes, and from which pairs of pages had been torn in different places. More. Ruth did not appear greatly affected by the proceed ings, and with the exception of a few Sarcastic remarks and a little hysterical daughter, no feeling was displayed. She was taken in a hack to the jail, and will there remain, unless relesezed on baal, antil «a preliminary trial is bad, which will probably be held within no weeks. Mrs. Ruth's Arrest. The Missouri Democrat of Monday has the following concerning Mrs. Ruth's ar rest. It is from the pen of Mr. Ferguson, the reporter of that paper, who attended the Medlicott trial, and whose symparhy with the prosecution was unconcealed. The article should be read with thiatallow ance. Matinbla information reached un yeater day, to the effect that Meadruth waa are rented and lodged in jail in Lawrence, on Saturday, on the charged df tebag mecenaary to the death of the chief, Dan Miles Ruth. We are not informed that any new facts tending to duplicate Mra, uth base home to hyde since the convicted of Dr. Mud vott, but it ty encuite that the depressor made by the teatiogny ab his trial was not at all favorable to her public opinion coupled Muglicott and Mel, Ruth an guilt lovers, and to any personsd declared that if one was a murderer, the other could not be altogether innocent. The officers however, have, in all probability, obtained additional testimony in regard to the part taken by Mra. Ruth; or it may be that they had this, evidence before, and only waited the result of the trial of Medlicott before proceeding against her. At the trial of Medlicott, the prosecu tion was uoked by a spectator why Mrs. Ruth was not crossexamined, and Mr. Hutchings replied significantly that “there was no very good reason for it.’’ AT that time, it is surmised, he had in his posses sion certain evidences of her complicity, and prudently held them back. The trial of this woman will add anoth er chapter to the dark record of crime, and lift the veil from certain transactions that are now shrouded in mystery. Her trial will be as interesting and exciting as wis that of Medlicott, and much of the game ground will be traveled over, while new developments will startle the com munity. ‘The old adage, ** Murder will out,” is strongly exemplotied in the case of Medlicott and Sirs.fitch. We learn that Mr. Seymour Voudlaire, who was for fifteen years the husband of Mrs. Huth, and is the father of her five children, started yesterday for Lawrence, for the purpose of taking charge of the children and employing counsel for the accused, Vote of Douglan County. The vote of Douglas county will prob ably reach 4,600, at the coming election. For the Piftyeaecond and Fifty-third districts, we have heard the mames imen Hioned of several gentlemen who are fully competent and would do honor to the county ; among them, Gov. Robingon, B. W. Woodward, Sum. Kimball and G. 5. Houpton in the Fifty-second, and George W. Beacon, S.A. Ragga, O. 2. Learnard, D.C. Haskell and Dr. Williama in the fifty-third. We have heard no one men tioned for the fifty-fifth district except Col. Sella. There are inypoortant interests at stake this winter, and In the selection of our Representatives personal and partisan feeling should be laid aside. Let us unite and send up our best and most influential men. The Statv University. The heart of every Kansen, and espe cially of every citizen of Lawrence, should swell with pride upon visiting our new State University. When completed, it will not only be one of the finest universi ty buildings in the West, but in the Union. The work is done in the most substantial manner, and the location commands a view of the city and surrounding country that cannot be otherwise than pleasing to every eye that has taste for the beauti ful. The building has so often been fully described that we feel it unnecessary to repeat it at length at the present time. We all feel proud of our University, and feel proud of its success, which is now in sured. Little by little the good work has gone on, until assuming its present grand eur. The work on the interior of the building is steadily progressing, and the intention is to have the new building ready for use by the first of January. Ev erything for the convenience health and comfort of students and professors will be complete. The rooms are large and airy, and will be lighted with gas, while registers will be put in the rooms, to make them comfortable in winter. The next move should be to take some six or eight feet of the hill from the front of the Uni versity, 10 that the edifice can be open to an advantage from the city. But this, we learn, is to be done. Hence the sugges tion is unnecessary. The institution now has on competent and able facillty, and the present term opens under more favorable suspices that any former one, the number of students being nearly double, that of last term, and applications for admistion still continue. Altogether, the prospects of the Uni versity are flattering, and we trust every citizen of the State will fear enough pride in our educational inturcaty to helps the good work. Kirelion Dinner, Our friend, ** Uncle Tommy ? White, is the Democratic candidate for County Com missioner for this district. Saturday he gave a dianer to shoot fifty of his personal friends, of the restaurant under the Jous xat ofice. It was altogether a very pleas ant affair. After an abundant feast of good things, a meeting was organized by calling Mr. W. Hadley to the chair, when the fol lowing resolution was offered and unani mously adopted: Resulted, What in our worthy and generous host on this occasion, we recog nize a oain eminently qualified, by his sterling integrity and business experience, to Gil the office of County Commissioner, and we cordially recommend him to the earnest support of all faithful democrats ; and, as Republicana, we shall be strongly inclined to excuse any of our faith who may be induced, being tempted by quail on toast, custess stewed, fried and raw, and other delicacies of the kind, to give him their suffrages. * Mr. White was called upon for a speech, and responded by delivering a few very humorous recorde. He said he had never held but one office in his life, that was school district treasurer, in which capacity he served for sometime. If he was elected to the office of County Com missioner he would try to discharge the attics of his offer to the satisfaction of Cathelic Cuynee.—The brickwork of this new edifice, on Kentucky street, was finished on Saturday, last, by Kreamer Dee, the contractors. The church, when complete, will be quite an ornament to that part of the city, and the style of the mason work reflects great credit upon the builders.
