by Rich Greer The neon lights of the old Brighton Diner will shine no more. On Monday, October 21, at 2:00 p.m. the 'B.D.,”’ as it has stood on Main Street for over 35 years, serviced its last customer. The diner is undergoing an extensive renovation. Within the course of the month the front dining portion of the Brighton will be removed. Only the kitchen facilities, located at the rear of the building, are to remain intact. To this a new dining room will be added. The new diner will be quite different than its predecessor, according to the 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. waitress, Connie. The stucture of tables and booths will increase. For music fans, jukeboxes will be localized to each booth thus catering to the tastes of each party. Management and help are to remain. No new help is expected to be hired. The only noticeable difference in the waitresses, says Connie, ‘will be new red aprons. Since the diner’s christening in the early 1940's, ownership of the Brighton has changed hands many times. Presently the diner is co-owned by Nick Stavros and Gus Straus. They have operated the diner for two years. The reason why the diner is being replaced, according to the owners, is its ailing structural itself will resemble the competing Delphi Diner, located two miles east on Route 44. The color scheme of the new dining room will evolve around various shades of red. Traditional linoleum pink and vinyl gray seat covers and wa i are to be replaced with red ade patterns. As Connie states, ‘‘this will make the Brighton a happy place.’ In addition new menus will be red and a little larger, as will be the new prices. Less counter space is planned, as once is being placed on the ‘family style.’ In this regard the number condition, It appeared to be more economical to simply move the old structure away and move a new one in. As of this time the fate of the old Brighton is unknown. On the last night the “regulars” were gathered at the counter and around favorite tables. The time and temperature flashed from the marquis of the First Savings and Loan Association across the street and reflected off Ho-Jo's orange roof. Those of us inside knew that in a few short hours a small piece of Poughkeepsie would be gone forever. Brighton DINER ‘ails FAMILY STYLE is to be Brighton Diner's new image with red brocade seat covers to make the diner ‘‘a happy place.”
