Because ofthe untimely death of Mines center Wesley Salonen the game was canceled at the end of the first half with Eastern ahead, 7-6.Salonen died late in the first quarter. When word was received of his death just before the end of the half the game was immediately called off. Death was attributed to a broken neck. Apparently no one was near him when he collapsed but he could have been hurt on a previous play.Playing an aggressive game of ball for the Yellowjackets is Henry “Blackie” Yonce of Columbus,Blackie is an all-around athlete here at Eastern, participating in four major sports: football* track, baseball and basketball. In foot-Salonen. a native of Butte, was a sophomore at Montana School of Mines. He was married and had served in the army from 1947 to 1950, He was known on the Mines campus as a great football player, good sportsman and hard-working student.Almost immediately after the the attack which led them to thegame's first touchdown. A seriesof runs starring backfield men Blackie Yonce, Tim Mullowney and Jim Haug culminated in aone-yard plunge to pay-dirt byJim Nicholson. Yonce crossed the line for the extra point giving the Hornets the lead, 7-0,game started, Eastern began anEarly in the second period E.M.C.E, drove as far as the Ore-digger 2-yard line, but a fumble by Yonce gave the Miners the ball and ended the scoring threat.Later in the same canto Mines began a passing attack which resulted in their only touchdown. Sparking the aerial attack was the passing of Carl Wegren. Score was a pass from Wegren to Miller from the Eastern 5-yard line. Fong’s extra-point kick was wide.
