Heyer MysteryDUPLICATE Death,” a mys-j tery slory from the pen of Georgette Heyer (best known for her period romances) starts slowly. For a while it is little more than a capable character sketch of three or four people —an obvious adventurer, his enigmatic female associate, her daughter and an impecunious lordling. Then a death occurs at a duplicate bridge party and Chief Inspector Hemingway enters the story. From then on the pace speeds up. Suspects begin to mount. Behind the slow moving story other events are revealed. There is a duplicate death—this time a woman. A slow, relentless shifting of events begins. Stories are checked and re-checked and discrepancies brought into the light. All this is done before the eyes of the reader so that a personal participation in the detection is possible. The super-reader will uncover the culprit but most will have to wait until the final chapter. [Evident throughout is the story-telling ability of Georgette Heyer. Besides crime there is humour and the eternal interplay of characters in which she so obviously revels and with which she is so expert. Those who like Georgette Heyer will like this book and so will everyone who likes a good thriller.Duplicate Death’* by GeorgeUr Hcver. Published by William Heine-mann Ltd. From the publishers. 12 3.f
