A Western Ontario despatch re ports that in one night no fewer then 1,700 birds, chiefly thrushes and warblers, dashed themselves to death against the Long Point lighthouse on the Lake Erie shore. This mortality was the heaviest of anyone during the season but hundreds of birds have lost their lives at this one light house during the year, and the same must hold true of other warning signals established along the Canadian coast line. _ the Dominion wishes to pre serve that bird life for the protec tion of which it has already en tered into a migratory bird treaty with the United States and estab lished a number of bird sanctuaries in different parts of the country, it is evident, that with the move ment of radio beacons as well as lighthouses something must be done, says the Brockville Recorder to prevent the heavy mortality that is going on. This loss is the more serious when it is realized that most of those birds which have recently lost their lives on Lake Erie are of species that de vour the countless iascts. A suggested remedy, already adopted with success in the case of British lighthouses, is to equip them with perches upon which the birds may alight for rest. It would not cost a very large sum of money to make this addition to Canadian lighthouses and the Dominion would be the gainer to the extent of giving further protection to its birds and saving the lives of many thousands of them that now, dazed and hopelessly lost, dash themselves against the lights. An Ottawa despatch, yesterday says. Methods to protect migra tory birds from killing themselves by dashing into light houses are now under consideration, says of ficials of the Marine and Fisheries Department. In co-operation with the Interior Department, informa tion is being collected as to the number of birds destroyed at the various lighthouses in Canadian waters. It is expected that screens and perches will placed about the Strictives. The matter was before the Lighthouse Hoard some years ago when bird-lovers were requested to offer suggestions as to the best means of saving the birds. Offi cials said, however, that no suit able was put forward at that time.
