DOUGLAS COUNTY SHERIFFARRESTS OLIVER SPORTSCounty Attorney McKay Sends Detectives to Former Oasis\and They Turn in Information Against a Big Bunchof Citizens and Former Handlers of Booze.A few weeks ago, Archie McKay, state’s attorney for Douglas county, Wis., pleased all lovers of law, order and decency by grabbing Max Rosenberg and several membra of his notorious gang and giving them a good dose of the law. Last week, Mr. McKay continued his most laudable work by grabbing a bunch of chronic lawbreakers at Oliver.Bibulous little Oliver, once a famous oasis and summer home of Old John Barleycorn, has been too dead to skin since it was dried up under the federal law. A number of the disciples of lawlessness and low moral endeavor have been wiggling around for many weeks, resurrecting old John Barleycorn whenever there was enough in it to pay for the seance, and feeling secure in their disregard for the laws of the sovereign state of Wisconsin.Patience at last ceased to bo a virtue, so county attorney McKay hired some detectives and ordered them to ramble around Oliver for a few days. As a result, Mr. McKay and sheriff McGuire pulled off a neat little raid that netted several booze sharks.Sheriff McGuire was accompaniedto Oliver by city patrolman Hawkin-eon and deputies Buchanan and Os-trom. They served warrants on Sandy Sanders, Fred Bernard, Tony Reistrof-fer, M. £. Bak, Sam Assa, Matt. Pin-nell and Ernest, alias “Happyf9 Pin-nell.9Being arraigned in municipal court in Superior, the accused pleaded not guilty. Fred Bernard, held on two charges, put up $200 bail. Matt. Pin-ited with slipping out of the back doors of their respective joints and escaping across the St. LouiB river bridge into Minnesota. Had sheriff McGuire put a couple of men at the bridge end before he made his frontal attaek on the- Superior side of Oliver, it is believed that he would have bagged several more birds than he did.Bak and Murphy have been carrying on various forms of low moral en-deayor around the Oliver hotel, if reports are correct. The former bears the brand of a panderer, white slaver and purveyor of blockade booze. Sam Assa is a Syrian who quit honest em-plopment at the shipyards to become a lawbreaker./Tony Reistroffer is the successor to Tony Thompson in Oliver, but he haSg not had the fat pickings that the ter did when he was frisking around* at Oliver and between there and Duluth and the Duluth hinterland. Reistroffer 's ostensible occupation has been#* that of chef for Jim Roddy. TonjlThompson, by the way, can tell some interesting stories about his old Oliver friends.! George Baccich escaped this net. Whether he has joined the church or merely was lucky for once, the great family journal is not informed.Charley Rebek’s cabaret was dark and he was sick in bed with pneumonia, therefore he failed to see the fuawhen the sheriff came.-o——nell, with one charge against him, wasreleased on $200 bail. Ernest, alias 11 Happy,'9 Pinnell, had three nasty charges against him, therefore had to put up $700 to escape a dungeon.
