He also has a store here and carries a fair stock of general merchandise, and conducts the post-office in a satisfactory manner to the public generally.Friday Harbor, though small in population, is the seat of much business. It is centrally located on the northeast boundary of San Juan Island, and is the county seat of San Juan county, which comprises the islunds of San Juan. Orcas, Lopez and a number of smaller ones, which form the San Juan Archipelago. The new court house is nearing completion, and will soon be ready for occupancy. It is a neat two story structure 24x40 feet. On tin* tirst door are the offices of tin* probate judge, uuditor, sheriff and assessor, which are now being plastered by Mr. McCabe.stone mason and plasterer, formerly of this city but now a rancher on San Juan. The entrance to the upper story is by a flight of stairs at the rear of the building. Mr. A. X. Glasscock, of Lopez Isl and, is the contractor and builder, and has done nearly all the work without any help. The upper story will not be hard-finished at present, and the judge’s office, which is large and commodious, will be used for court sessions until such time when the upper story is completed. The building, as it now stands, cost the county $1,400, which amount was acouired by the sale of county laud at Friday Harbor, and tbu county still owns u number of acres, and has just cause '.o feel proud of the exhaust of its domain in so elegant a building.The buildings of the town are nearly all new. Prominent among them is the new two-story building, 20x4ti, of Mr. Thomas Drummond, formerly of Port Townsend. It has a very handsome oval front, upon which, when we left that place lu»t Saturday, Mr. Dice, sign puintcr of our city, was engaged in making some handsome characters us follows: ’••Thoiuus Drummond, dealer in gen eral merchandise.” Mr. D. carries a full stock of general merchandise, and is agent for Well, Fargo Co’s, •xpress.The Douglus hotel, constructed by Mr. William Douglas, is a haud-wome building. 21x40 feet, with two stones and a large, stone cellar, where those who thirst may drink; and the sorrowing may be made glad. This hotel is destined to do a good business in the future, as these islands will be a n favorite public resort in the near bfa and by*,4'Lu town also boosts two wharves, the tirst one we come to, the new one, being the property of Mr. Drummond, the other that of Mr. Sweeney. A commodious ware room is housed in on each wharf. Both gentlemen carry a stock of agricultural implements and other goods necessary to the people of the islands generally.While here we met Judge War bass, who has been u resident uf San Juau for more thau thirty years, and is personally acquainted with the early history of the islands and the thrilling vicissitudes through which they have passed. He is an interesting talker, pleasant and affable. We met all of the county officials and found them to be men of intelligence and fidelity. In company with the Judge we visited Mr. MacDonald's
