/'te11}'Jtoidreamwiytrit-ivIC-cynrl:HD,a popular speaker in the canvass of 1 B40.”ill ilk Sickness—Tremble Weed.There 1ms been much anxiety among the people in some parts of the State, to ascertain the cause of milk .sickness or sick stomach, which often impairs the constitution, and sometimes proves fatal. It is generally supposed to be produced by a kind of weed or shrub which the cattle eat, and the poison thus becomes incorporated in the flesh and in the milk, which produces a disease called the trembles, in the cattle, and the sick stomach, or ttfilk sickness, in the human being who partakes of the fiesh, butter or milk of the animal affected. Others deny this, and attribute the calamities to the impurity of the water at its low stage. Those who hold it to he a weed supposed it to be one resembling ivy; but there is another kind that lias been found to produce these effects, which we have been requested to notice.Mr. Thomas James, of Perkins, brought to our office a few stalks of weed which he says is the principal green vegetable in a stubble field, into which he turned his cattle after the grain was removed. In a short time he discovered that these animals had the trembles. For the purpose of ascertaining the effect of this weed, he shut up a yearling calf, in a perfectly healthy state, in a yard, and fed it exclusively on this weed, with the exception of some hay, and as much water as it wanted. To make the weed palateable, it was dipped in brine. In three days the calf sickened, and died of the trembles on the seventh day.The weed grows spontaneously about three feet high, has a round wiry stalk, a smooth leaf, a small white blossom and an unpleasant smell. Mr. James will give any information upon the subject to any person who will take the trouble to call upon him for the same.Sandusky (O.) Clarion.
