Initial Match Will Be Staged Tonight At The Country ClubThe Statesville Country Club will inaugurate a new and special feature tonight at the club house on the Salisbury highway. Mr, Harold L. Isenhour and Mr, Andrew D. Milstead will stage an exhibition fencing match for the members of the club interested in this popular sport.Fencing is comparatively new in this section, although it is one of the oldest known sports, In older days fencing was required as an important part of the education of every gentleman, and the duels of long ago illustrate the need for a knowledge of the art.Since that time, however, dueling has been outlawed and fencing was allowed to lapse into obscurity by the majority, who have little need for a knowledge of swordsmanship in this modern age. Today fencing is practiced purely for the sport, and is one of the most popular sports in the colleges and universities of the nation.In recent years it has made a splendid comeback, and has become an important part of the athletic program in many large universities, The activities being undertaken here are started for the purpose of arousing interest in this fascinating sport, and to the end that it may be developed to the extent that a team may be formed for competition with nearby cities and colleges.
