Whippet Driver Is Easy Victor At Frontier Park; Harold Clymer, Local Pilot, Injured BY EARL COUGHLIN. If Johnny Gerber neglected to bring his lunch basket to Frontier park yesterday afternoon he over looked one of the prime functions of a holiday outing. For the noted Kansan enjoyed a peach of a picnic as he swept all before him in the Memorial day motor races of the Cedar Rapids Amusement associa tion. A pre-meet favorite to achieve added laurels on the west side oval, Gerber pushed his Whippet special to victory in the five-lap dash, the first ten-lap preliminary aid in the fifteen-mile sweepstakes to collect an even $1,000 for his day’s efforts. The final event of the program, thirty laps for a $1,275 purse, had nine starters. The first time around saw Gerber leading with Schrader in second place, followed by Triplets and Sawyer, another Californian. This order was maintained through out the grind, Gerber’s Whippet, functioning perfectly, gradually wid ening the gap until he was ahead by more than 100 yards at the fin ish. Triplets gave Schrader a warm argument for second place, never more than ten yards behind, but he was unable to get around the blue Dodge special. Because of Gerber’s superiority some of the thrills usually seen at Frontier park were absent, but a se (Continued On Page 5, Column..4.)
