Believing that no government should license or openly tolerate that which is morally wrong, for 1G years he had beeu voting foi the National Prohibition party candidate for President, and four years ago served as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Prohibition party of Lincoln county.Mainly self-educated, he was a diligent student all his life. As a preacher he was analytical, clear, logical aud sound. One of the greatest sermons ever heard iu the Baptist church in Brookhaven, where some of the ablest preachers of the Southern pulpit have preached, was delivered by Bro. Douglass, though, such was his native modesty, he never presumed . himself to be anything more than an i ordinary piuey woods Baptist preacher. In 189G-97 he carried ou what is known asthe‘*Clark-I)ouglass Debate,” with Elder N. L. Clark, of the Christian church, combatting what is popularly called “Campbellism.” The able and scholarly mauuer in which he maintained his side of the debate has been approved and highly compliment- . ed by competeut critics of the Baptist faith.
