have never known a nobler, braver, purer or more consecrated Christian j character. He was wise in counsel, patient under trial, courageous and aggressive in action, and the first i Elijah, in his coutest with the prophets of liaal on Mt Carmel did not possess a bolder or more heroic spirit thaD our Elijah, when it came to battling for the right. There were many ways in which he continually reminded me of that great baptist leader. Dr. J. B. Gambrel I, whom both of us so greatly loved and admired.Though always loyal to the claims of his holy calling, Bro. Douglass did not take a narrow and contracted view of his responsibilities as a citizen. He was not one of those who act as though they thought a man becomes decilizeuized by entering the ministry or too sanctified to participate in mat-iters civil and political. His idea was rather, that the better Christian a man was the better citizen he should be— not in a passive, indifferent sense, but by an active, aggressive gooduess. Asa consequence, he was one of the best of citizens, always taking an active and patriotic interest in the enforcement of the law and in political affairs.
