VOL. 43. NO 48.THE BRAIDWOOD STRIKE..The Dagos, the Militia, the Mine Owners and the State Big Battle Expected at 6 O'Clock this Morning.BraidWOOD, May 28.—The militia ar- | rived soon after midnight, but stayed in the care till 3:30 a. m, when “hark, the trumpet,” called them “to arms, to arms, ye brave.” They marched out on the prairie near the “J” shaft, two miles northeast of Braid wood, and went into camp. They had good appetites for breakfast, after which they were pnt through evolutions.Eight or ten newspaper correspondents, who spend their time writing exaggerated accounts of the affair, went over to Grundy county and interviewed the dagos. Finding no danger, the Italians followed the ''newspaper men back to near the J shaft when Col. Bennitt threw a line of men entirely around them and proceeded to search them for arms. The gallant Pon-tns Heintz was detailed for this duty and did it well. One big Italian had a stiletto inside his pants and several had revolvers. These were sent to the guard house.I. V. Park was captured yesterday by the dagos, but as he could out talk them they let him go. He proved that he had Italian blood in his veins because he had eaten maccaroni. The company has cleaned out the J shaft of the carts a ad debris thrown into it, and are ready for work. The work will be resumed Wednesday morning by the negroes and a few Italians. There is no danger to our troops, whatever, except from Braidwood whisky, and Col. Bennitt is keeping that away from the boys.Adjt.-Gen. Vance is on the ground, accompanied by Col. G. S. Dana, of Spring field, his assistant adjutant-general, and they are wise and competent men to handle a strike of this kind, having been through four similar and worse ones. All is quiet to-night, but there may be trouble in the morning at 6 o’clock when the whistle blows for the miners to descend into the shaft It is reported that 800 miners from Coal City will inarch shortly after midnight to arrive at the J shaft before daylight, for the purpose of reinforcing the Braidwood dagos. Two companies went out this afternoon to Godley and captured two guns. Co. C, Capt. Blanchard, went out but brought back no captured arms. The dago3 seem to be getting all the blame, but the English, Scotch and Welsh miners are as much to blame as the Italians. If the former really wanted to go work they would ^ whn out the entire Italian crowd as quick as you could say “Jack Robinson,” and that without help of the militia. If anybody gets hurt it will be a poor, igno- • rant Italian dago.\ M.
