King's House Riddled By Bullets In FloridaBY RANDOLPH PENDLETONST AUGUSTINE, Fla (UPI) —A« unoccupied beachfront cottage rented by integration leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr was riddled by bullets from, 'four side r Friday in a new out i burst of racial violence in this, historic city Two shotgun blasts shattered the windows of another Integra tion leader’s automobile, but both occupants vf the vehicle eseaped injury The shootings followed a mid night clash that involved whites, Negroes and police Two men were hospitalized Authorities slapped a ban on demonstrations in hopes of heading off further violence Kmg sent a telegram to President Johnson urging that U S marshals be sent to St Augustine to protect the Negro communityThe integration leader charged that “all semblance of law and order has broken down and m the last 48 hours, we have witnessed raw and rampant violence even beyond much of what we have experienced in Alabama and Missis sippt ”King was in San Francisco when at least 19 shots were fired into the cottage Says He Not Surprised He said he was not surprised at the incident, since the city is undergoing a “reign of terror ” He vowed the shooting would not stop the current de segregation drive Negro leaders met during the day to discuss ways of sidestepping the ban on demonstra tions,- and city officials held counter meetings in hopes of plugging all loopholes 10 the ban.Tornado Hits New Mexico
