A record number of 219 awards; jWere presented last Saturday, May ,25, to the students of the various music organizations of Liberty Un ion School during the annual Band and Chorus Awards Party spon sored by the Band and Chorus Pa rents Organization with Mrs. Ar mand Weakley the retiring presi dent. A capacity — plus crowd total ing over 230 parents and students filled the high school cafeteria to over-flowing for the evening sup per hour at which time a well planned cooperative dinner was served by the parents. Following the dinner awards were presented to 83 high school vocalists who received certificates in recognition of their participation in the senior chorus. A total of 80 senior concert and marchiing band awards were presented to the in strumentalists in these select or ganizations. Senior Band awards are based on a four year program of grades 9 to 12. Freshmen receive chenille letters, sophomores are presented certificates, juniors receive cuff links with a music clef emblem, and seniors are awarded a sue dene music emblem award in scribed with their high school mu sic activities. Some 56 junior high band awards were presented the 6th, 7th and 8th grade musicians. Junior Band let ters are presented all 7th grade instrumentalists while 8th graders, and those who qualify for member ship in the 6th grade receive cer ificates for membership. Highlight of the evenings activi ties was the presentation of the Arion Award from the National Arion Foundation for outstanding musical achievement as presented by the Bark of Basil to a senior student from the band and chorus who has contriiuted most to the music organization during their school music career. The Arion Award recipients are: Selected by the band and docus: members through a majority vote and the approval of the mu sic supervisor, Thomas Coffman. Selection is carefully made by ionsideration of the following pre- requisites: better than average ischolastic standing, cooperation fever and above normal duties, ge neral musicianship, music perfor mance, attendance, ambition, dili gence, inspiration to others, per sonal habits, qualified to carry on the best traditions of the school. WINS BAND AWARD Mary Ruth Weakley received the Arion Award in Senior Concert and Marching Band. She started her music career in the Sth grade elementary instrumental music program and progressed through Six very active years of high school and band membership, dur ing such time she developed into an excellent musician of the trum pet. Her varied activities included junior high solo contest for which she received a “I or Superior rating, high school ensemble com petitions as a member of the trumpet trio which received a “TT” rating in 1961 and a “I dur ing the 1963 State Competitions. Mary Ruth was also a member of the pep band for two years, the jazz band for three years of which she was secretary during 1962.1 commencement band two years. high school Marching and Concert Band since 1957 for which she served as treasurer in ‘62 and Vice-president in '63, and all-coun try band in 1962 and 1963. Mary Ruth was quite active as a vocalist holding membership in the girls glee club for one year and the senior chorus during her four years as a high school stu dent. HONORED FOR CHORUS Pamela E. Gierhart received the Arion Award for Chorus, which is but one of the numerous music groups in which she is active. Starting as a sth grade clarinet student, Pam progressed well and obtained proficiency on several woodwind instruments including B- flat clarinet, bass clarinet, and, tenor saxophone. She held membership in the high school chorus for 4 years, serving as president during 1963, glee club for 2 years, and the girls quartet in '63. . Pam has also been most active, instrumental by having held mem bership in the pep band for two years, commencement band two Years, all-county band two years, mixed clarinet quartet this year, jazz band president in '63, and Marching and Concert Bands since 1957 in which she served as librar ian in '60 and secretary in 1963.
