‘There are a number of quartz claims located in the vicinity of ‘Silver City, and several companies have been ‘form to work the different claims. On two mines work has been carried on to some extent for a length of time. These are the Alberta and the Queen of the Hills moines. Shafts have been put down to a considerable depth. . It is understood that machinery will shortly be on the spot for crushing the rock. The quartz which is now being taken out is said to contain both gold and silver in pay ing quantities, and it is expected to grow richer as the work proceeds. The shaft io the Queen of the hills is down 180 feet. A considerable sama has been expended on both of these mines, and the managers declare themselves fully satisfied with the result. In the Rocky Mountains proper— that re gion east of the Columbia River, very little accurate knowledge can yet be had of its value as a mineral region. In re gard to placer wining there have as yet been no discoveries. As report was sent out some time ago that placer gold had been discovered near Silver City, but since then nothing could be learned of the matter.. .
