Mr. Thomas emigrated from Wyoming Valley,Pa., with his venerable father, Gen. Samuel Thomas, who survives him, in the year '18S4, being at that time about 18 years oJtl, ami was therefore one of the early pioneers’ of Hie county, ilc at once acl-ively engaged in those practical pursuits which enlisted the services of all new comers, and for years was known as anenergetic business man, giving employment to many of limited means, and thus aided in developing the resources and industries of the country. In 1850 he was elected shcriif and ex-ollicio iollcctor of(lie county, which ojllccs lie tilled with ability. Subsequently lie was engaged in the interests of the “Air Line” railroad, and in various positions and for several years was identftied with that enterprise. Ills residence being then at the countyseat, lie joined the Masonic fraternity of• . .Toulon, and the records of the lodge show that lie was raised to the decree of a Mas-ter Mason 'November 1850, and thatlie was elected worshipful master of thc| lodge November 30, 1857. Having re* moved afterwards to his homestead in.
