Art and design students at colleges and high schools across the country are being invited to design a symbol that can be used to identify packages made from recycled and recyclable materials, through a nation-wide com petition being sponsored by Container Corporation of America, which has a con tainer plant in Dalton. According to Henry G. Van der Eb, president and chief executive officer of the Chicago-based packaging company, ‘‘The purpose of the contest is to obtain a symbol that will readily identify packages made from recycled or recyclable materials, to remind concerned citizens that recycling is conservation. “By designing a symbol that could be used on packages made from recyclable or recycled materials,’”’ Van der Eb pointed out, “students can help promote public awareness that’ greater recycling of fibres provides an immediate opportunity to improve the quality of our environment.” The Container-sponsored contest is open to students in design and art schools or departments of colleges and high schools across the country. Entries will be judged by a jury of representatives from the fields of design, education, and government. The judging will be held in Aspen, Colorado, on June 20, following the International Design Conference in Aspen, which this year will focus on “Environment by Design.” Awards will be in the form of tuition grants at the art or design school of the winner’s choice, with a first prize of $2,500, second prize of $1,000, third prize of $500, and merit award certificates to runners up.
