1945-1959: Msgr. Hoffman Marks 14th Year As Parish PastorServed Here Since Separation From Army After WW I!“By their fruits, you shall know them. These words of Scripture can be very aptly applied to the present pastor, the Right Re’.-erend Monsignor M. M. Hoffman, not only for the material advancement already recorded to his credit, but more especially in the abundant spiritual fruits which have blossomed forth during his pastorate.Msgr. Hoffman was bora in Dubuque, Iowa January 7, 1SS9, the son of Mathias and Mary Voelker Hoffman. He attended St. Mary’s j grade, schooland graduated fromj Loras Acaderay. ^After graduating from Loras College, Dubuque in 1309, he studied theology at St.Paul Seminary* in St. Paul Minnesota. On June II. 1313, Msgr. was ordained to the Holy Priesthood. His first assignment was as assistant to the Very Rev. Theodore Warning at St. Francis Xavier parish in Dyersviils. He remained in Dyersville until 1917. when he enlisted in the Army and left as an Army Chaplain with the American • Expeditionary forces for Europe. After the war Father Hoffman remained in Europe, and went! to England to study at the Univer: i siiy of Oxford- ]jReiurning to this country in 1920.! he was appointed Professor of j Economics at Columbia (Loras) i College in Dubuque. He received his Masters Degree from the Carbolic University of America in 3924, and in 193S the degree of Doctor of Literature was conferred upon him. Because of his-interest in economics and industrial affairs, i he was elected Director of the Dubuque Labor Forum and in this; field he wrote a number of-articles for national economic Journals.In January 3941, Father Hoffman was again called for Army Chaplain j duty to serve in World War II- He jj was s ationed at Foil Rosecrans.;San Diego, California, where he: supervised the building of a recrea-1 tion center for service men. and i started a Jarge library for the i soldiers. jHe was then transferred to Fort j McDowell at San Francisco, .Calif-j ornia and six months later was j sent to Camp Sloneman. Pittsburg. |Calif., where he was promoted to \ the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.;In the Autumn of 1943 he was op-1 pointed Chaplain of O'Reilly Gener- \ al Hospital in Springfield. Missouri. -Father Hoffman has traveled j quite extensively, making several trips to Europe. He has \ is? ted'Cuba. Russia. Germany, Italy.
