Al Dexter ComingBack to CabaretAl Dexter, who will appear at the Cabaret Ballroom on Saturday and Sunday, May 29-30 with his Columbia Recording Dance Band, shares an unusual distinction with Bob Wills. In a recent survey it was disclosed that two records in the folk field that have sold over two million copies each and which are still selling in record shops all over the country are Al Dexter’s ‘‘Pistol Packin’ Mama,” and Bob Wills’ “San Antonio Rose.” When Dexter wrote “Pistol Packin' Mama,” a few seasons ago, it was recorded by most of the leading folk entertainers and. even by many popular singers, including Bing Crosby. Al’s own recording of the song hit the two million mark very soon after its release and even today Columbia Records sells many thousands of records of the song every year.Al’ formula for writing hit songs is a simple one: “Give thepeople words they like t0 sing and rhythm they can dance to, and you have a pretty good chance of turning out a hit.” Al confides. That his formula works is proved by the number of hits Dexter has turned out since “Pistol Packin’ Mama.” A few which are heard on the radio every day and played on juke boxes across the nation are “Guitar Polka,” “Down at the Roadside Inn,” “ Wine, Women, and Song,” “New Broom and Boogie,” and “Rock and Rye Rag.”When Al Dexter and his Troopers get on the bandstand at the Cabaret this Saturday and Sunday they will play not only their own Columbia Record hits, but will include in their program the tunes dancers all over the country have voted as theirfavorites.• •mp,an- 9fin fiOn Pounds Wool
