Last Monday the Building Trades Workers’ Unions, held a protest meeting against Mr.ullens, M.L.A.. In the Royal Hall, strong protest was made against the attacks made by Mr. Mullens on the trade unions, and trade unionists were urged not to vote at the elections on June 12 for this man, who has betrayed trade unions and has joined hands with the U.A.P. The meeting was addressed by Mr. Don Thomson, secretary of the Building Trades Federation; Mr. E. Taylor, secretary of the Muni tions branch of the Amalga mated Ironworkers’ and Munition Workers’ Union, and Mr. Mick Montgomery, who is an organiser of the Ironworkers’ branch of the Union. Mr. Bert Flanagan, union secre tary well known to Ironworkers, sent his apologies as he was pre vented from being present because he had been called away to Bendigo on union business. All speakers appealed to the Footscray people not to vote for Mr. Mullens. The following reso lution was carried with only five people opposed: — “This ‘public meeting of Footscray electors strongly condemns the lying at tacks made upon trade unions ald their leaders by Mr. Mullens, MAL.A., who used the cover of par liamentary privilege to make his cowardly and lying statements. Such statements as those made by Mr. Mullens are designed to split the unity of the workers, and are injurious to trade unions. Such statements are harmful to anti- Fascist solidarity so necessary for the victory of the people over Fascism.” On June 7, at Royal Hall, Mr. Don Thomson ceding ( Tiritties Federation), Mr. J. Brown (It ways Union secretary) and My, Bert Flanagan (secretary, [ron workers) will * speak and urge the electors to vote for Mr. Ceril Sharpley, the Communist candidate and assistant secretary of the Munition Workers’ Union, tify his countenance. We could , but not for the reason of his fre quent local appearances. For after 19 years’ connection with the Bray brook Shire Council and two years with the Williamstown Council, we have not once seen him at a meet ing of those bodies. It is in con trast with the attitude of the Hon. G. L. Chandler, ML, a repre sentative of portion of the Bray brook Shire, who has paid period ical visits to the Council Chamber and asked to be informed of the requirements of the municipality, and he has at the same time des cribed his activities for the elec tors. We have learned from an old Councillor of Williamstown that the Hon. “J.H. has not been present at the Council meetings here for 20 years, and has never at any time sought direction on any public matter, it is all eye-wash talking about, the improvement that has been achieved as the result of the sit ling member's energy. Melbourne West Province definitely needs a live-wire representative to team up with the virile Hon. P. J. Ken nelly, MLC, the other member, who is a born fighter, and is it hat reasonable that the whole of the interests of the Province can be better served if a resident from each side of the river has a voice in Parliamentary administration. Dr. Jackson is the logical choice at this election, and everyone knows that he would be more active than his opponent, who is approaching the 80 years mark.— Editor.!
