He was born in Prussia in 184,3 and graduated in 1880 from the German American Institute in New York. In 1864 he graduated from Frieburg and then came to Nevada and settled in Austin, where he married Miss Mane De Succa in 1868. He then became a partner with Stetdefeit and was one of the owners in furnaces built by him. He started the first smelting furnace in Eureka, and in 18^9 was employed at the old English mill here in Reno, and afterward ran it on his own account, but the competition of the Denver smelters caused it to close down and it has since gone into decay. He returned here in 1885 in the interests of some Eastern capitalists to purchase the property but the scheme fell through. He was possessed of more than ordinary ability in hiB profession and being genial made many friends.
